In the days leading into Brazil’s most consequential presidential election in decades, Meta and TikTok have steered millions of Brazilians toward baseless accusations, false claims of election fraud, and extremist content, says human-rights group @Avaaz. https://t.co/vaKyug9eW2
We are now 18 minutes from the close of voting in todays Brazilian presidential election and the media are setting up in front of the Hotel Intercontinental, where Lula is expected to arrive shortly to await the counting of the votes, which should finish in a little over 4 hours. pic.twitter.com/aJqS1Eu5cF
Superior Electoral Court President Alexandre de Moraes is giving a press conference. "All buses that were stopped by the police eventually made it to the voting centers. The average delay was 15-20 minutes. They were routine traffic stops," he says. + pic.twitter.com/m9KACoO6S2
"We haven't analyzed if there was any regional discrimination in traffic stops yet. But, since no buses were blocked from arriving at the voting centers, and the average delay was 15-20 minutes, we don't believe there was any harm done and will not extend the voting deadline."
"Let's not rush to judgement here, because voting ends in 1 hour and 6 minutes. At that point, all people who have made it into the voting centers will be able to stay there until they vote."
Asked why there were more roadblocks today than on Oct. 2. Moraes says, "the Police Director said they received complaints of irregular transport in various counties and set up roadblocks to investigate. We'll review all complaints against the highway police in due time."
The fact is, since Bolsonaro has been threatening an auto-coup all year, it's understandable why these roadblocks are being treated as a warning sign. Moraes has been getting death threats all year from the Bolsonaro coalition so hard to believe he is deliberately helping them.
The next step here is to see what the OAB (National Laywers Guild) says about this, but since voting ends in an hour, all we can really do now is wait for the results to be tallied.
A political analyst I know and respect just said, "is there any precedent of an election where the highway police worried so much about buses with bald tires?"
I think: so much for all the monkey business, conspiracizing and the like. Get used to the idea that a sizeable number of people in many democracies prefer Bolsanaro/Trump type populists at this point in history and elections are going to be close. They are passionate, not imaginary; you can't chalk it all up to "they stole the votes" conspiracies, they are there and you have to counter them by turning out more of the less passionate.
Brazil's Lula says Zelenskiy 'as responsible as Putin' for Ukraine war https://t.co/XIHE8FibSo

Lula can only implement an anti-imperialist program if supported by a mass of the mobilized work force. @PCO29 will be in the streets: China, Iran and Russia are our friends. Russia has the right to defend itself. The Amazon, Petrobras our riches belong to the Brazilian people https://t.co/n7c3e0Zgz4
I really don't envy Brazilian voters - especially Jewish voters.
As someone deeply concerned at the spread of this new, politically acceptable far-right, I'm very happy to see Bolsonaro defeated. As an Israeli... well, the fact that Iran has congratulated Lula tells you a lot.
Lula on Ukraine: "Putin shouldn’t have invaded Ukraine. But it’s not just Putin who is guilty. The US and EU are also guilty. What was the reason for the Ukraine invasion? NATO? Then the US and EU should have said: 'Ukraine won’t join NATO.' That would have solved the problem"
Lula on Zelensky: "Sometimes I sit and watch the President of Ukraine speaking on television, being applauded, getting a standing ovation by all the [foreign] parliamentarians. This guy is as responsible as Putin for the war. Because in war, there’s not just one person guilty"
Lula's top foreign policy advisor to Bloomberg in August: Lula opposes sanctions on Russia, because they increase the risk of nuclear war. Instead, Lula will continue the policy he previously followed as president of pursuing close diplomatic ties with Russia pic.twitter.com/TDBzNoF1jm
Putin sent a message of congratulations to Lula for his election victory. The result "has reaffirmed [Lula's] high political prestige," Putin said pic.twitter.com/a7r3NbkQsV
Fascinating from David Shor - the poorest least white areas went even more strongly for Bolsanaro; the richer whiter areas went for Lula -
Mirroring trends seen elsewhere in the world, Lula gained the most ground relative to Hadad on Sunday in richer, whiter parts of the country.
Bolsonaro did worse in most of the country but still managed to outperformed his 2018 vote in the poorest and least white neighborhoods. https://t.co/5RLIYvYZe1
