Great to see US open to new ways of doing things > policy can be innovative too > There's a new welfare mantra, says @noahpinion: Handouts are the hand up people need https://t.co/IdTFP7uhlQ via @bopinion
The right was hostile to UBI because it said people would have no incentive to work, but many on the left were hostile because they rightly UBI might break down the demand for various other welfare agencies.
Maybe if Don Jr weren't being paid out if the campaign grifter acct he'd have reason to work and less time jawboning on Fox. His coked-up girlfriend as well
second half of your comment is very good point, much of what social workers now do is help people navigate a humongous complex bureaucratic web of possible government benefits
Belinda sounds like a Republican; this is exactly why so many have nothing against it. Especially when it's not means tested, it becomes an entitlement:
Ro Khanna, and lots of other people, apparently, not getting facts right about traditional unemployment, emergency payments vs. real UBI
"Many nations" did not issue monthly checks to their citizens as part of Covid relief. In fact, none did. In fact, the US is the only major country that's made large direct payments to most of its citizens as part of Covid relief. https://t.co/jXQ22DJhNx
A lot of countries had regular payments to their citizens that lost their jobs. Australia for example had the job keepers program. Germany also had a program. The US is the only nation that made checks a thing because they didn’t have any support system
Unemployed people got $2400 a month in extra benefits, and we did wage support through the PPP program. And we’ve done 3 direct payments to most households on top of that.
Not saying I agree w @RoKhanna's position about monthly aid BUT James is WRONG about this not be common elsewherehttps://t.co/qmzWc8Dd1h

James is not wrong. He's talking about monthly checks to people regardless of employment status. These are paycheck replacement measures. They're analogous to expanded UI and PPP loans in the US.
The only country on that list that made direct payments like the one Khanna is talking about to most of its citizens is Japan, and that was a one-off, rather than a regular check.

(a reminder that Trump gets this--at a very stoopid level, of course, but still--he consistently promoted $2,000 payments.)
