Some personal thoughts:
Husband and I have just recovered (mostly) from Covid... no idea how we got it since we've been super careful and not done much. Shopping or swimming we think.
I am left grateful for masks & vaccines - here's why: 1/8
A question for people in the field of public health. Say you got Covid tomorrow and felt bad enough to drive to the hospital. If you could just have your way, would you want the Pfizer pill that the FDA has yet to give an EAU or not?
I like this answer because it gets at the heart of the problematic nature of the nanny state public health role of our FDA as well as the vagaries of our torts system as regards things citizens injest:
Just 67.5 percent of Germans are fully vaccinated, a level that has left the rest of the population wide open to infection by the extremely contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus. Speaking last week, RKI chief Lothar Wieler said: "We aren't talking about isolated outbreaks anymore — all of Germany is one big outbreak. This is a national emergency."
By the end of this winter, Germans will either be "vaccinated, cured or dead," according to the country's health minister. https://t.co/gY0rH4jc5a

« If new restrictions are necessary to deal with this pandemic wave, this time there’s someone to blame: those who refuse to get vaccinated. And if border checks and quarantines are reintroduced and people discouraged from traveling, tourism-dependent countries such as…
…Spain and Portugal will suffer most, despite having among the highest inoculation rates — while a third of Germans remain unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated. » via @POLITICOEurope

By Rick Noack @ WashingtonPost.com, today at 11:08 a.m. EST
PARIS — The French government scrambled to respond to protests against covid-19 restrictions in two of its overseas departments in the Caribbean this week, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an “explosive” situation.
After a week of at times violent protests on Guadeloupe, the French government deployed special police forces to the territory of some 400,000 residents over the weekend and was expected to launch a mediating effort on Tuesday
There were also growing concerns over a general strike in nearby Martinique, an action prompted at least in part by recent coronavirus restrictions but also rooted in a range of other grievances.

In both overseas departments, the French government has implemented rules that are similar to the ones that have been in place in mainland France for months, including a vaccine mandate for firefighters and health workers and a health pass to restrict access to venues.
Those rules prompted weekly protests in mainland France in the summer that have now faded. France’s health pass is seen as the key reason for a significant rise in the country’s vaccination rate since then.
Agence France-Presse reported Tuesday that protesters in Martinique shot at police officers and firefighters.
Authorities in Guadeloupe have arrested over three dozen rioters over the past week. There were numerous reports of looting and street barricades, and a regional attorney described the situation as “quasi-insurrectional.” [....]
Long-haul Covid patients who are health-care workers sadly find out the hard way: it's the way most medicine is practiced rather than factors like class or race:
I wrote about healthcare workers with long-COVID, & how their experience changed their view of medicine.
HCWs & long-haulers are often framed in opposition, but here's the story of people who sit across both worlds. 1/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
Most medically trained long-haulers I interviewed were shocked at how quick their own peers were to disregard their medical expertise and tell them their symptoms were in their heads. Their status as patients completely subsumed their qualifications. 2/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
Healthcare workers w/ long COVID have told me that their own doctor made the finger-circling-a-temple gesture at them, or told them “hormones do funny things to women.” For some, the experience has shattered their trust in their own profession. 3/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
Several healthcare workers told me they only understood how debilitating chronic illnesses like long COVID or ME/CFS could be when they felt it themselves.
They completely revised their understanding of what “fatigue” can entail. 4/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
For many, this has provoked painful introspection. Some candidly confessed that they dismissed patients in the same way that they have since been treated. They’re ashamed about it. “What else was I wrong about?” one said. 5/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
Some HCWs said that having long COVID has already changed the way they practice medicine, and were optimistic that long-haulers could change the field from within. But others have left, are too sick to return, or are still being ignored. 7/ https://t.co/57vRpfYG0e
This piece is a companion to the last one about healthcare workers leaving their jobs because of the pandemic & medicine’s pre-existing weaknesses. The forces described in that piece will exacerbate the problems described in this one. 8/ https://t.co/TDSVVm8ZAZ
Boris Johnson wouldn't say this unless he was convinced by his scientists that Omnicrom was a serious threat
BREAKING—PM warns: “The #Omicron spreads very rapidly & can be spread between people double vaccinated. There is very extensive mutation—diverges quite significantly from previous, and as a result, might in part reduce the protection of our vaccines over time”. #BoosterShotspic.twitter.com/ojp4Zq7DAG
[....] DR. FAUCI: I dealt with it by focusing on what my job is from the time that I went into medicine to right now, where I am at my age, my job has been totally focused on doing what I can with the talents and the influence I had to make scientific advances to protect the health of the American public. So anybody who spins lies and threatens and all that theater that goes on with some of the investigations and the congressional committees and the Rand Paul's and all that other nonsense, that's noise, MARGARET, that's noise. I know what my job is.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Senator Cruz told the attorney general you should be prosecuted.
DR. FAUCI: Yeah. I have to laugh at that. I should be prosecuted? What happened on Jan. 6, senator?
MARGARET BRENNAN: Do you think that this is about making you a scapegoat to deflect--
DR. FAUCI: Of course-
MARGARET BRENNAN: --From President Trump?
DR. FAUCI: Of course, you have to be asleep not to figure that one out.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, there are a lot of Republican senators taking aim at this. I mean--
DR. FAUCI: That's OK, I'm just going to do my job and I'm going to be saving lives and they're going to be lying.
MARGARET BRENNAN: It just, it seems, another layer of danger to play politics around matters of life and death.
DR. FAUCI: Right, exactly. Exactly. And to me, that's- that's unbelievably bad because all I want to do is save people's lives. That's what I have done for the last 50 years, 40 of which was 37 of which was leading the institute. And when I see people who scattered around misinformation and lies that can actually endanger the lives of people, but also it is very easy to pick out an individual and make them a target because that's what people can focus on. But you're talking about systems, you're talking about the CDC, you're talking about the FDA, you're talking about science in general. So if they want to- I mean, anybody who's looking at this carefully realizes that there's a distinct anti-science flavor to this. So if they get up and criticize science, nobody's going to know what they're talking about. But if they get up and really aim their bullets at Tony Fauci, well, people could recognize there's a person there. There's a face, there's a voice you can recognize, you see him on television. So it's easy to criticize, but they're really criticizing science because I represent science. That's dangerous. To me, that's more dangerous than the slings and the arrows that get thrown at me. I'm not going to be around here forever, but science is going to be here forever. And if you damage science, you are doing something very detrimental to society long after I leave. And that's what I worry about.
MARGARET BRENNAN: And in real world terms, what does that mean? Does that mean you fear vaccination rates go down? Does that mean the next national emergency people just don't listen to the doctors. What- what do you mean?
DR. FAUCI: Yeah, what I'm concerned about is that if you put science aside and if you discredit science, you start to discredit the truth of what it takes to get people their health preserved, prevent disease, treat disease. When you do that, you are going to really disrupt society in very many respects, and that's what I worry about. I mean, anybody who looks at what's going on in the United States to say there's not a lot of- lies become normalized now, and the social media amplifies the normalisation of lies. So scientists try to say this is the truth, and it's based on data. That's what we live by, data, evidence, truth. And then you all of a sudden have permeating in society, it is OK to say anything you want that is patently, obviously wrong. And if you say it long enough and often enough and you get social media involved, then everybody- not everybody, X percent of the population starts believing it. See, that's what I worry about more than people throwing slings and arrows at me because my whole life has been as a scientist and I identify with the field of health and science. And if you're attacking me, you're really attacking science. I mean, everybody knows that.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You told my colleague Ted Koppel that you would not retire until you get COVID in the rearview mirror?
a very angry German guy after seeing a Fox segment, taking it further on Tony's and they're going to be lying thing to they're fucking spineless lying careerists just like the Nazis they're claiming he is

ANTI-VAXXERS: U.S. Supreme Court Justices ruled in 1905 that the government has authority to “reasonably” infringe upon personal freedoms during a public health crisis by issuing a fine to those who refused vaccination. Our government should use fines now to encourage compliance. pic.twitter.com/EpjptcDEqm
Europe’s winter surge has highlighted the disparities in vaccination rates across the continent.
In several highly vaccinated countries, infection rates have surged to double those of last winter’s peak, but Covid-19 deaths have not been rising at the same rate. pic.twitter.com/JGCyf0N9oi
looking like a lot more anti-vaxxers may be dying soon:
7/ Are persons that were previously infected but unvaccinated immune to #Omicron? No. Quite the opposite, actually. There’s a new pre-print from South Africa that suggests that Omicron may be spreading quickly *because* it’s able to infect previously infected individuals https://t.co/HUIqXlz146
