This is correct, & ofc NYT should report NYC's 2-year murder increase accurately. Their initial headline made a serious error, describing a 40% increase as a "doubling."

A big part of the falling murder rate since the 90s is the result of dramatic improvements in trauma medicine, rather than dramatic declines in criminal violence.
The Gulf War specifically fueled the mass production of modern tools like easy-use tourniquets, chest seals and hemostatics that made gunshot wounds vastly more survivable.
When can the police or the city get some national guard assistance ? When do we sound our military alarm ? These folks are enemies of the state as far as I’m concerned. Stay safe
Maplewood police confirm a group of 10-12 adults and juveniles targeted the Best Buy store in a "grab and run" theft of multiple high-value items like TVs, tablets and hoverboards last night about 8:10 p.m. pic.twitter.com/C20keP40aS
The incident follows another, now-confirmed report from Burnsville police of another group--as many as 30--who stormed the Best Buy store there and fled with TVs. In both instances, the suspects fled before police arrived.
Maplewood police say they are working with the Minnesota BCA to ID the suspects and their possible connection to other large-scale thefts in the metro.
There’s a really bizarre tendency to downplay these flash mob robberies as non-violent crimes against faceless corporations, but it’s pretty clear they’re only non-violent as long as nobody gets in the way. https://t.co/v9hDKAEbHM
School police have found a stolen van with an ATM inside of it on the football field of a school in Northeast Baltimore. They found it around 12:15 p.m. This is the van someone stole from downtown Baltimore and drove into a Walgreens in Essex yesterday. The license plates match.
Oh. You thought I wasn't paying attention to the license plate numbers. This says some things for me: (A) County police must have trailed and arrested the wrong person. (B) Clearly these folks did get away with the ATM. (C) It likely was the work of The Last Chance Bandits
My theory is that The Last Chance Bandits consists of some members of The Ching Bandits, a crime crew that outsmarted city police multiple times in 2019. The Ching Bandits seemed to enjoy dumping some of the stolen ATMs on school property in West and Southwest Baltimore.
That likely means—if these two crews consist of some same members—they grew bolder during the pandemic. Exhibit A: Police found an ATM that had been dumped on the football field by Frederick Douglass High School on Nov. 8, 2019. This was during the era of The Ching Bandits.
That ATM was taken from the Hamilton Grocery Store on Hamilton Avenue at 5:45 a.m. Additionally, these guys have favored the football field or soccer/tennis area of any public facility. Exhibit B: Police recovered an ATM near the tennis court at Leakin Park on Nov. 11, 2019.
Leon Day Park was a favorite "ATM dumping zone" for a very long time. It has a football field too. Exhibit C: Police found an ATM that the crime crew dumped in that field on Nov. 14, 2019. Exhibit D: They found another one there on Feb. 9, 2020. Pattern much?
But these guys weren't exactly picky. They sometimes dumped the ATMs along Ellicott Driveway. It was like a bad breakup. They left their boy on the side of the road and told him to get a hack home. So he did. Exhibit E: An officer happened to drive past this ATM on May 3, 2020.
I had picked up a hobby of repairing furniture during the pandemic, so I happened to go wandering into the bushes that day in search of whatever junk I could salvage and I found...another ATM. Exhibit F: Officers recovered a second ATM on May 3, 2020.
These guys had a pattern of using football fields and parks as dumping grounds in 2019 and 2020. But they grew bolder during the pandemic. Exhibit E: Environmental police found multiple ATM machines at Easterwood Park near Carver Vocational School just days later on May 7, 2020.
Where did all those ATMs come from? Well, leading up to that point there had been many brazen thefts of ATMs in the Sandtown/Harlem area. These guys were just walking in and taking the ATMs in front of corner store owners and their customers during the day.
An ATM was stolen out of Club Bar. An ATM was stolen from Gilmore Carry Out Grocery. An ATM was stolen from Fox Liquors. They said "fuck it" and left that one in the middle of Fulton Avenue though. Minutes later, they took an ATM from Uac Food Market. J&H Market was targeted too.
That's five ATMs targeted and one left behind. I don't have much free time during a workday, so I didn't venture out there to see whether police recovered four or five ATMs. Exhibit F: the math works out with four.
Imagine if the cop that tried to stop this man shot and killed him as he tried to stop the vehicle from entering the route. MSM, politicians, and others would be up in arms about shooting an unarmed man. There would be riots and the cop probably would have been prosecuted.

The new problem is that everyone and his uncle went out and bought handguns in 2020 in perhaps the greatest handgun buying boom in history while the Geo. Floyd protests and a pandemic were going on. And now those handguns are causing death and mayhem in mass quantities across the country, especially in instances of use by the untrained. Furthermore, they are perfectly legal in most states and localities.
Who the heck is going to go in home and confiscate them? They certainly would not win re-election...
Some kind of licensing as with motor vehicles is the next step? Which would encourage a lot of parents and relatives and family who can effect things to take them more seriously? And allow police to ask to see licenses?
