Did a little dive into international homicide statistics after seeing these kind of shocking tweets which suggest Brazil gets quite a mulligan on violence reputation from media:
So I bounced around a bit and finally found this Wikipedia page
Yes they've got a reporting problem there, but overall it still does a decent job of comparison.

I'm a bit torn on all this - much seems about Scientology - a $400k settlement is less about Masterson & more the church.
And where I read somewhere how the charges show he's an ongoing danger, where would be the crimes outside 2003 to show incorrigible he is. ""I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with." seems a bit over the top for court and ignores decades after with AFAIK no such complaints.
I also think the judge allowing the prosecution to claim Masterson drugged the victims opens things up for a mistrial - Cosby had a dozen women claim such. Here I'm guessing Masterson's ex didn't claim she was drugged, so only 2 intoxicated women guessing they were also drugged with no physical proof or long-term similar behavior on the perp:s part makes it a questionable assertion.
(the judge also seemed awful lecturing for a case built on 2 women's testimony on late night events 20 years earlier, even tho the testimony sounds horrific. (it could also be exaggerated, but considering she was supposed to be slipping "in-and-out of consciousness" but the courtroom memory 17-19yrs later is pretty explicit. ). The MeToo law opened up earlier cases for judgment, but the chance of mistakes is also much greater - a bit of restrained humility might be called for.

I'm also a bit confused - character letters are for *after* verdict, during sentencing. So theoretically, they're "despite the thing he/she were just convicted of they're not all that bad (thanks mum), repeated in courts every day. We've seen this in Jan6, murder cases, and so on. I'm sure Bill Cosby's wife declared what he meant to her. What is it about post-#MeToo that requires everyone in the community play a disapproving "me too" scold to the person charged, but along with the obviously better positioned court? While some ppl are incorrigible, is it not allowed say to acknowledge that Woody & Soon-Yi have some love in their relationship after 35 years together, but whatever the molestation accusations and other disapproval from the 90s? (they appeared together in Venice days ago for his 50th film, and which of course resulted in articles 4/5 about the 90s scandals).
But at least Masterson's trial was with accusers of adult age not in the middle of a messy divorce with a controlling mother and weird distant father, so hopefully the verdict represents more of the truth, despite the Scientology/anti-Scuentoligy drama.

Over a lifetime of experience, I personally KNOW this is what happens. People stop going "downtown";if it's unpleasant or just has nothing special, much less dangerous, it happens A LOT, everywhere in the U.S. A subculture taking over doesn't cut it except with its fans, and yuu start to loose those too if its dangerous.

Gee, honey, you're a couple decades behind - we don't go down to *America*, not worth the effort compared to borderless EU with streamlined rail,inexpensive air junkets, and safe urban/suburban transit systems, and did I say *no guns"? For young people it may be difficult to give up campuses in downtown LA or New York where you can pay only $60k a year to have life informing experience of living next to the homeless in criminally overrun neighborhoods, vs the stigma of subsidized socialist $2k/year education in old musty stalwarts like Berlin and Barcelona, but you'd be surprised how many go for it. (for freeloader Eurotrash, post-Brexit British education is now up to a respectable $25-50k tuition vs the previous $12k for everyone - keep the riffraff out).
