More people have been murdered on the NYC subway this year than unarmed black people shot & killed by police, nationwide. They're not related, except the reaction. The latter sparked a national "reckoning" while with the former I'm hearing we shouldn't "over-react" to anecdotes.
Also worth pointing out that for two years (2016 & 2017) there was but one person murdered on the subway in those two years. So while seven murdered this year (to date) might not seem like a large number in a big city, it's a horrible horrible increase.
Yesterday I saw a firefighter response to a known presumably homeless and definitely angry man in my neighborhood. 5 firefighters and an engine. No cops, lest they, what? Shoot the guy? I presume the guy had been sprawled out/passed out on the sidewalk, though I don't know. (1/2)
The guy refused help. The firefighters drove away. Within seconds he was quietly harassing an Asian woman who had to flee after about 10 seconds of him not leaving her alone. Then he shuffled off again. This is the life he is "choosing" to live. The system isn't working. (2/2) pic.twitter.com/FBmOeoxM8y
If there is no freedom from frightening harassment by homeless crazy people and wilding youth, it's dejas vus allover again 1980's when this happened at least once to a majority of people traversing Manhattan We almost forgot what it was like, but now the bad memories are floating up (even if in a car, you were not protected as you encountered aggressive, erratic "squeegee men".) The type of tourists who look forward to "slumming" might get an adrenalin thrill out of this - and a story about their trip to the big city to take back home - it's not as much fun when you're encountering it trying to navigate your own daily life and you don't know if you're lucky that day. Daily adrenaline rushes about possible maiming or death are not all they are cracked up to be.
