My latest Dispatch from Portland: A tarot card-reading liberal arts major, a Sudanese immigrant, and a former hotel worker explain why they are out protesting in Portland. https://t.co/Ve1lGG4SNa via @reason
I've been wanting an article about Portland by someone I know personally and trust and here it is. @jacobgrier is honest and thoughtful and sensible and has lived there for years. https://t.co/Ts8zuW6TTi
Brooklyn (and I must stress this is Brooklyn, not "NYC", they are becoming more separate and different every day--Brooklyn may actually end up being the center instead of still deserted Manhattan from now on) coming out in support of Portland today
Seattle protesters threw large rocks, bottles, fireworks and other explosives at officers Saturday, police said. Others set fire to a portable trailer and a construction site, police said in a series of tweets.
At least 45 people have been arrested on charges of assaulting officers, obstruction and failure to disperse, police said. Twenty-one officers have been injured from having projectiles thrown at them, according to police. Most officers were able to return to duty, the department's Twitter said. One officer was hospitalized with a leg injury caused by an explosive.
Police described the protest as a riot [....]
The showed video of the construction site fire, it looked pretty serious. I haven't looked at any videos on Twitter.
NYTimes roundup on protests Sat. across the country:
Across the country, protests widened in solidarity with the marchers in Portland, Oregon. In Seattle, demonstrators smashed windows and set fires, and 21 police officers were injured. A shooting at a protest in Austin, Texas, left one man dead.https://t.co/Yu8e5ny49F
Trump looks pretty weak. He sends in troops and winds up looking like a bully. The protests continue and expand to other cities. This is documentation that Trump is the last person in the world capable of handling the situation. COVID deaths are increasing and he does nothing, People are suffering economically and his colleagues in Congress go home. Trump is his own worse enemy. The story the mayors will tell is that things were quieting down until he inflamed the situation.
That's obvious in reports that numbers grew in some places in reaction to what he had done in Portland and some protests were enlarged in support.
But a reminder that Trump is not the original target of the protests. Police are, and mostly under rule of local governments run by Democrats. So getting rid of Trump will not at all solve what most protesters are upset about.
Trump aggravated the situation. Putting private police on the streets resulted in justifiable outrage. Portland served as a reason citizens in other cities came out in droves. There is no magic bullet to solve the police problem. Police have been able to make politicians cower for decades. As police response to protest is captured on camera, they are now being seen as problematic.
We can hope for national standards for police behavior and a national registry of when police use force.
Limiting access to guns and having access to jobs and health care may serve as a means of having less contact with police.
None of the above can happen with Trump in office.
Last Tuesday, on the plans for closure of the Patricia Clark Youth Detention Center:
"King County Executive Dow Constantine issued a statement over Twitter Tuesday, announcing a plan to close the remaining youth detention units at the controversial Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center, or CFJC. Constantine says the closurewillhappen "asquicklyaspossible" .....activist groups like the No New Youth Jail Coalition have long argued that the juvenile detention facility is outdated, and disproportionately harms young Black and minority residents. Between January and June of 2017, 45 percent of the youth detained in King County were Black, despite only making up 8 percent of the county's youth. It's also been accused of being part of the "school-to-prison pipeline"..."
As quickly as possible wound up being yesterday. Who would've known?
I must say I just can't believe that this new zeitgeist of radical activists taking things into their own hands because the wheels of legit government are moving too slow for them is going to sit well with a lot of non-protesting voters if it continues.
But maybe I am wrong, maybe lots of people have gotten to the point where they think it's cool for mobs to take justice into their own hands. Maybe that's the zeitgeist.
End game though, if that keeps happening: nobody is going to run for office. Why would they if the mobs are the ones everyone always supports?
This guy almost always is able to tweet a quote from the ancients appropriate to the day's zeitgeist:
There is no moderation in the common rabble: they incite terror if they are not terrified, but when they shake with fear they can be scorned with impunity.”
nihil in vulgo modicum; terrere ni paveant, ubi pertimuerint inpune contemni. #tacitus
The account is new, started in June, has lots of videos, just started posting on protests in NYC and is clearly sympathetic to the protesters. And furthermore, doesn't comment a lot politically, is presenting as just a reporter of what protesters are doing and what police are doing.
If it's trying to be disruptive like a Russian troll would, he is awful awful subtle and smart about it. Nothing else seems altered to me, looks like very accurate reporting, though it does seem almost too well done at times.
I'd tend to believing that one is true as the Brooklyn crew of protesters that came over the bridge yesterday tend very much to be Bernie types or Green Party types.
Black humor in that neither is wearing a mask but the firearms keep them socially distanced!
(To be fair, the anti-protester had just been cruising alone in his car and wanted protesters out of the way. Got me thinking that if your firearm is for self-defense, what good is it if you catch coronavirus from the guy you are threatening with a gun?)
comment on same by the author of "Chaos Monkeys..."
Americans are losing their minds.
I always thought matters would reach a tipping point in states with concealed-carry laws, and it seems we're there: Americans holding guns to each other's heads on the street in a previously sleepy college town. https://t.co/SnbaSZXoP8

Frankly I have no idea what you're talking about and who the groups you name are. It just gibberish to me. But since you never have anything to add to any conversation here I'm not even going to try to interpret your McCarthy era gibberish and the other tribal identity labels you like to use.
McCarthy was a drunk and an idiot but he was right about the commie scum in the government and Hollyweird in his time.

Sigh, as I implied only recently somewhere else on this site, why do people on the internet think calling other citizens in a democracy scum will accomplish political goals? It's a mystery for sure.
The Postmodern Left has no use for democracy when they lose or fear losing as we have seen for the last four years.

Okay, enough stupid shit - your usual fucked up comments are useful to remind ppl there are a lot of idiots like You sustaining Trump, esp. come November, i.e. there's a Real threats, but i'll start deleting your rectally formed comments unless you actually present real thoughts.
I see the Truth still has power and all a Pathetic Punk can do is delete.

What do you do here except engage in your bizarre name calling? What have you ever added to the dialog here? What topic do you offer for debate? Whether we are snowflakes or Bolsheviks? Why do you come here to do just that? You're sick in some weird sort of way.
If that's the case he would be very much like them. It's provocation to anger, that's what trolls do. They might do it because they want to out the target as having some agenda or ideology, but they also might just do it for kicks. And the moderator is the cop, and as one wise sympathetic dyke said to me in private messages when I was a moderator "your problem is nobody likes a cop." But the strange thing is our Nonny just babbles the crazy nonsensical insult language like it is nothing. Unlike oceankat, I've never seen it as personal attack on users here. It always seems to me he is attacking "those others out there", and while he knows we may be sympathetic to them, his aim is to make us see the light or something? By insulting groups of people, with strange insults that use name calling incredibly inaccurately? I just can't take insults seriously when the targets are not even that clear. If the goal is getting a rise out of me, it doesn't work.
Just admit you cant handle a challenge and take the weakling's path to attack what you can't debate.
[Just admit you're a lying sack of shit who must be on the pay of someone to keep coming around denying the same shit that's been proven over and over, by Mueller, by the NYTimes, by Jason Leopold's FOIA, etc - And fuck off - PP]

BTW, Anon, how about those agreements Trump signed with Russians fór a Moscow Tower while telling Americans he didnt know any Russians? How long have you enjoyed providing cover for flatout liars and Russian Mafia types working aginst American institutions? Just admit you cant handle a challenge and take the weakling's path to attack what you can't debate.
You can't seriously believe that. What questions are you offering up for debate?
Are the new generation of Un-American scum as bright as the old commies?
Are the small crowds of snowflakes showing up for these Mob Performances disappointing for the Globalists?
It is entertaining to watch the Bolsheviks turn on the Party leaders?
If you believe you're coming here to engage us in rational debate you are delusion to the point of some sort of mental illness. If you're coming here just to fuck with liberals that's just a different form of mental illness.
It's apparent from your responses I would be delusional to expect rational debate here so I don't.
Perhaps a few thousand people view this site and I offer a fact based counter-narrative, with your feeble peevish responses. If nothing else it may entertain them.

Garrett Foster had protested "almost every day for the past 50 days" with his fiancé, Foster's mother said.
By Julia Weinstein @ BuzzFeedNews.com,July 26, 2020, at 3:32 p.m. ET
A man was killed Saturday night after gunshots were fired at a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas.
A suspect — who witnesses said tried to drive through the crowd of protesters before shooting the victim — was arrested Saturday night and is cooperating with officers, the Austin Police Department said.
The victim was brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured during the incident, authorities said.
The victim was identified by family and friends as Garrett Foster, an Austin resident who was protesting along with his fiancé, Whitney Mitchell, who is a quadruple amputee.
It is not yet clear what led to the shooting, and police have not identified the suspect.
A police official said Saturday that Foster "may have been carrying a rifle and approached suspect vehicle."
The suspect then shot at the victim from his car, the official said.
Shortly before he was killed, journalist Hiram Gilberto Garcia interviewed Foster, who was reportedly carrying an AK-47 rifle. During the interview, Foster said that he began bringing his gun to protests after his roommate was arrested during one of them [....]
This is quite something. One officer gives a go signal, and a group of Seattle bike cops charges through a parting line of officers and into the crowd of protesters. pic.twitter.com/nEHDO0jTu5
A.P. reporter n Porltand retweeted by Maggie Haberman, filtering out the kabuki, reporting the real shit:
I watched as injured officers were hauled inside. In one case, the commercial firework came over so fast the officer didn’t have time to respond. It burned through his sleeves & he had bloody gashes on both forearms. Another had a concussion from being hit in the head w/ a mortar
The lights inside the courthouse have to be turned off for safety & the light from high-powered lasers bounced across the lobby almost all night. The fear is palpable. Three officers were struck in the last few weeks & still haven’t regained their vision. pic.twitter.com/33Mt2WyNsV
Balsamo & Flaccus' A.P. published report from both sides of the fence:
I spent the weekend inside the Portland federal courthouse w/ the US Marshals. Mortars were being fired off repeatedly, fireworks & flares shot into the lobby, frozen bottles, concrete, cans & bouncy balls regularly whizzed over the fence at high speeds. https://t.co/PU4xbzwniY
Thousands took to the streets this weekend from Los Angeles to Richmond to Omaha. In Portland, authorities declared a riot after protesters breached a fence surrounding the city’s federal courthouse building.
At a triangular park in a tranquil Alexandria, Va., neighborhood, a group of about 30 gathered Sunday morning and awaited directions for a disruptive mission. They would protest the detaining and removal of demonstrators in Portland, Ore., by federal officers last week, and they would do it outside the home of acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf [....]
The U.S. government exercised extensive authority in Portland, Ore., a city that has made it clear it opposes the presence of federal agents.
New protests in other cities are creating a dilemma for local leaders who had succeeded in easing some of the turbulence in their streets.

Good thread on the professional protestors, or rioters if that's your preference, out being active now. Though this guy may dislike them, there is no reason to see this as an attack on them, it's just recognition of the reality of what they do. That many are not the innocent naive victims that some portray them as (heck, in the past, many ACTUP protesters, for example, would be offended as being innocent naifs.)

Want to know how activists in places like Portland take over roads, smash windows, light buildings on fire, and still have the press call them non-violent? Well, as it turns out these are well trained activists using intelligent, highly developed tactics.

It doesn't matter if they use social power instead of government regulations to shut people up.
"I'm not using the government to punish him for what he said, I'm using social power and clout to get him fired from his job so he can't pay his mortgage."
How ever the media may portray it the average viewer sees it as they see it. My parents who are life time moderate dems are scared by it and see it as riots and looting.
Thanks for mentioning it. When it gets like it is in Portland, both sides leaders are using old fashioned war tactics, basically a lot of the same stuff that military officers have always done. So I think it's not unreasonable to be scared by it. There's also the old classic line comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. I see the Rodney King classic of can't we all just get along as an alternative to that view.
Especially if it's not that far from you. My parents live in St Petersburg and the looting was happening in Tampa. Virtually the same city. With no guarantee that it won't spread to their neighborhood.
Even large peaceful demonstrations can be frightening IN THE CONTEXT OF A PANDEMIC. I mean really, it is just starting to get to me, enough is enough, as Cuomo said "message received." Compare and contrast:
The Democratic National Convention Committee has begun circulating a memo laying our some intense COVID-19 protocols for Milwaukee.
You must get a negative COVID test back before you can enter the main convention area, *and* be tested every day during the convention.
Protesting in meatspace has gotten absurd. Bored children all looking for excitement, don't have the discipline to do it from home. At least wait until there's a vaccine to go out to deface public property and burn police cars
In 3-Dimensional chess, neither the police nor protesters win - Its those who benefit from chaos going on, who are either seen as white knights or adults to save the day, or simply a distractio from the bigger theft and malfeasance going on. It just might be Bill Barr's funding these protesters, they're doing such a bang-up (sorry, had to) job.
Exactly, keep it up and the tide will turn against them:
Protests should challenge the conscience of the public, not make them have to decide who's more dangerous. This is stupid and counterproductive. I take the point that it's not having a 1968 effect, but it's not doing any good either. https://t.co/BoNPwjT6TJ
A thousand people are dying every day from Covid-19, and this is affecting minorities the most, yet it is of utmost importance to defend the right to keep attacking the Federal Courthouse in Portland Oregon?
It was apparently diminishing before Trump sent in BORTAC.Trump of course wants to make it worse.
You could have 10 social psychologists, 1000 interviews and not find exactly why each of the Moms, Dads, Vets, rioters, Boogooloos are out there. Some may be mentally ill. Most live there and will likely outlast BORTAC.
“The sense of disorder that Trump is promoting as a national threat actually works against him because it reinforces a sense that America under Donald Trump is a country in disorder and disarray,” link
There's an easy way to handle an online troll: don't feed him. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and other sympathetic mayors have made similar suggestions as regards the troll in chief: GO HOME AND VOTE. If they just went home in Portland, there would be no goons. They love that he sent the goons. Their little anarchist camp was petering out and dying and the troll revived it. Again, going home is the smart thing to do. Especially since the internet is there for all to use or abuse if voting is not enough for you. But then there's no thrill of burning real things down, people pointing guns at each other, vehicular attacks, tearing down statues, writing slogans on walls that essential workers have to clean off every day, unfortunately the internet can't offer those activities.
I can't wait for these voters to show up at the Dem Convention and recreate the '68 Chicago Convention.. There will be riots inside and outside the convention hall.

Seems you're not watching the dynamics close enough. Trump/Barr want to be Mayor Daley from a fed level, but what Fed building Is there at the Convention, and the protesters havent been targeting Dems so much. Will Republicans hold a Convention to protest, or will Donald just play a few more rounds of golf?
As the Republicans have become a public health risk for any community that would host their political activities, the RNC convention could well end up happening at a bomb testing range where the Branch Covidians can be quarantined before being allowed to return home.
It also helps that Trump brags about passing a basic senility test.
Then he tells the country about his delusion that he would throw out the first pitch in a Yankees game. Neither tha WH or the Yankees knew about the pitch.
Trump forgot he "moved" to Florida.
Edit to add:
Trump quoted a Houston physician who says hydroxychloroquine works for COVID
She also notes that sex with demons will make you sick.
Everyone is seeing who are the goons roaming the streets of these commie ruled cities. Everyone is watching the commie rulers of these cities promote and protect these street thugs and ignore their citizens pleas for help
You can't fool anyone anymore about who is behind this chaos and its purpose. The Feds and LEO's are mostly using kid-gloves to round up these Soyfa Boys and Berserker Ladies. In the '60's the cops weren't so restrained and would have knocked the teeth out of crazed 'demonstrators' leaving them bleeding on the street.
It will be entertaining watching the Dems at the DNC 2020 plead for law and order when the goons they armed and abetted surround them and chant Burn Baby Burn.

I'd guess this is the far-left counterpart. Watch her try to take a selfie while resisting arrest.
This is one of the most disturbing videos I have seen out of Portland yet. If this is what federal troops will do to a woman when the world is watching, imagine what they would have done if they were alone.
I still dont know what any of this has to do with George Floyd and Sandra Bland. Once again we've skipped past our recurring problem into some fantasy football/vid game arena.
A local activist and pastor welcomes the white protestors
PASTOR E.D. MONDAINÉ: Well, everyone seeking to advance justice in Portland, they’re facing great danger. And I want to be clear: We welcome our white allies in the street. We welcome the wall of moms. We welcome the leaf-blowing dads. Right now there are unmarked, unarmed federal forces kidnapping our citizens off the streets without justification or authority. The mayor of Portland and the governor of Oregon have both asked them to leave, and it’s all to no avail. We know that this is a violation of our Constitution. But with President Trump promising only more occupations in more cities, we ignore this risk at our peril. You know, at their core, the Trump administration’s actions are really hurting America, and not bringing America closer together.
But again, the focus has to be on Black lives and Black Lives Matter. It is Black lives and Black Lives Matter that took us to the streets. It is Black lives and Black Lives Matter that keep us in the streets. It’s a Black lives issue that keep us downtown nightly in the face of peril and trouble.
Clybutrn introduced a voting rights act bill in the House that honors John Lewis. The Republican Senate will not pass this bill. Republicans are the rate limiting step.
The House on Monday approved a proposal from Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) to rename legislation meant to restore a key provision of the Voting Rights Act after the late Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).
The lower chamber passed the proposal to rename H.R. 4 the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act by unanimous consent.
I saw this at the start with a lot of the protesters from Brooklyn seeking "action" with the cops by staying past curfew, even before that. I just censored myself because there were a lot of nice supportive people at the same time going to peaceful protests in parks and in Harlem and the like in the daytime. No police needed at those, they could tend to business.
It's bored kids who might be going to niteclubs if they had some to go to, I am not kidding. They think they found their purpose fighting the man.
By the time that young hipster got killed on the highway in Seattle by a speeding immigrant going the wrong way on a closed highway in a very expensive sports car, I had had enough. I read a lot on the story. I read all about her, her pink hair her fun sweet disposition and her 20 or so hipster friends that went every night for days to party on the highway that the cops conveniently closed for them after they contra'd the spot, so that they couldn't cause trouble. They danced and sang songs and sometimes chanted for George Floyd. It was so exciting to have a new club outdoors on the highway. Well, the fascist cops decided no more closing the highway for the kids to party on, new rule.
I get nausea now looking at all proud videos, like the kind Emma just posted, the masochism of wanting to experience war wounds and get a purple heart for the ages, say you were there, you were a street fighting man just like the Rolling Stones song, aggravated a cop enough to get him to bust your knee or something. You managed to get arrested, so proud! Oh boy, keep a selfie for the grandkids.
Saw it, been there, done that in 72 while still a teenager. It's like a rewind of my freshman year. Shall we go see that movie tonight or go to the riots? That's what we called it, going to "the riots". Sick then, sick now. The only difference is that all young men back then had the draft hanging over their head, so they had a personal reason to go crazy. And at least more of a reason that made sense to attack Federal buildings.
Such childish nonsense with a pandemic going on. Maybe they should all be drafted to Covid wards? Then they'd have something to protest about!
(My sister in law works in patient care, the one that immigrated from Kenya, she just had a bad injury of her lower leg when a 300 lb Covid patient she was helping walk fell on top her. She's still got to work! She's been transfered to front desk duty is all. Comes home every night in pain. And these kids go out and seek it. Don't mention BLM to her. She saw L.A. looting up close and personal. She's not a fan of the whole scene.)
These protests have almost all become bogus bullshit fueled by wannabe anarchists. Some naive idiots, some with revolutionary intent. The latter are going to be no help electing Joe Biden and no help to any Dem mayors, just a thorn in their side that they can't badmouth.
For chrissakes, trying to pull down that huge Christopher Columbus statue in Grant Park with ropes. That was dangerous and infantile. Join the military if you are so hungry for "action".
Really, why are liberals making excuses for a young guy carrying a big gun to protests, who tells a reporter his antagonists are "pussies"? Why is he any better than a right wing nut looking for action? It's sick.
A forceful campaign by federal law enforcement in Portland, Ore., has prompted an escalation in tactics from some protesters, while others wonder whether they are losing their focus.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Minutes before midnight on Sunday, the first firework of the evening screeched low over the heads of protesters gathered in Portland, Ore., sprinkling them with white flecks of light and ricocheting into the courthouse that has become a symbol of an unwelcome federal incursion into a local outcry over police brutality.
Some ducked under makeshift shieldsto protect themselves from the falling sparks, while others cheered at the sight of the blazing projectile hurtling toward the courthouse and the federal law enforcement agents inside: “This is what democracy looks like!”
In recent weeks, protesters in Portland have pointed laser beams, lobbed water bottles and trash bags and, in one case, according to the Portland Police Bureau, hurled an open pocketknife at the officers guarding the courthouse; they have used power tools, crowbars and bolt cutters to yank down a fence. In Seattle, demonstrators over the weekend set fire to several construction trailers at a youth detention facility, and protests in Richmond, Va., Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., were also marked by fires
Yet the nightly assault on the federal courthouse has been part of a much wider peaceful resistance — high school students, military veterans, off-duty lawyers, lines of mothers who call themselves the “Wall of Moms”
[....]
“To see people standing in Portland destroying property and not actually doing the work of advocating for Black people was disturbing,” said Rachelle Dixon, the vice chair of the Multnomah County Democrats and an organizer in the Black community. “I think they’re a distraction from the everyday needs of people of color, especially Black people. My life is not going to improve because you broke the glass at the Louis Vuitton store.”
During the protests Sunday night in Portland, organizers tried to gently coax protesters away from the courthouse, calling them to the nearby Multnomah County Justice Center to listen to speeches. “We’re family now,” said one of the speakers, a local activist and artist who performs under the stage name Itchy Trigga. “We can’t allow the feds to break up our family.”
But as the protest ticked closer to its 60th consecutive day, protesters regrouped in front of the courthouse. Federal agents responded to the fireworks from the crowd with tear gas, sending protesters reeling, and later began a pursuit through Portland’s streets.
On Monday, the U.S. attorney in Portland, Billy J. Williams, appealed for an end to the nightly clashes. “I ask all Portlanders to join us in working with community leaders, faith leaders and business leaders to find an end to this,” he said. “The violence is wearing this city out.”
Mayor Ted Wheeler and Jo Ann Hardesty, a city commissioner, said in a statement that they wanted to “discuss a cease-fire and removal of heightened federal forces” with the Department of Homeland Security, including Chad F. Wolf, its acting secretary.
Ft. Sumter called - said attacks on federal facilities dont always go well. The Bastille was kind of a one-off, and even there a lot of people seemed to have lost their heads.
(The underlined below are all embedded links at NYT site, but don't transfer with a paste, I am not going to hand transfer them in, you'll have to click if you want them.)
PORTLAND, Ore. — Attorney General William P. Barr forcefully defended the federal response to long-running protests in Portland on Tuesday, telling the House Judiciary Committee that the protests had become violent. The federal intervention has been condemned by state and city officials, but Mr. Barr argued it was necessary to prevent violence from spreading to other American cities.
The nightly protests in Portland, which began in late May as a response to the police killing of George Floyd, have become the backdrop for a conflict between federal officials and local leaders. Mr. Barr and other federal officials have drawn attention to vandalism and other reckless behavior on the part of the protesters, while city officials have said that federal agents dispatched to the district court in downtown Portland have exceeded their authority and harmed peaceful protesters.
There are currently 114 federal law enforcement officers in Portland, according to a legal filing from the U.S. attorney’s office, drawn from various agencies including Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Protective Service. Their presence has reinvigorated tensions that had been subsiding, local officials said. Several peaceful protesters have been seriously injured, including a Navy veteran whose hand was smashed by officers and a man who was shot with a projectile that fractured his skull.
“As I’ve said from the beginning, these peaceful protests are being hijacked by a very hard core of instigators, violent instigators,” Mr. Barr said. “Police casualties far exceed anything on the civilian side.”
Have protesters used violence against federal officers?
The crowds have been largely peaceful and have included high school students, military veterans, off-duty lawyers and lines of mothers who call themselves the “Wall of Moms.”
Mr. Barr acknowledged in response to questions from representatives that many protesters had remained peaceful. “You have a lot of people who are out protesting and demonstrating,” he said. “The particular violent opportunists who are involved here get into these crowds and engage in very violent activity and hijack it.”
But he emphasized that some protesters have thrown rocks, water bottles and fireworks at federal officers. Others have shone lasers at federal agents and at security cameras surrounding the building, in an effort to block their view of the crowd. Several fires have been set near the courthouse, which federal officials have said could spread to the building and harm the agents inside.
This has been amply documented with photographs, videos, and by New York Times reporters on the ground.
Here's a photo of a firework exploding behind the federal officers in Portland. pic.twitter.com/SrDhsddHxU
Mr. Barr also claimed that protesters had used Tasers, pellet guns and slingshots against the federal officers. The Times could not independently confirm the use of those weapons.
As federal agents moved beyond the courthouse and into the streets of Portland — which experts have said they may not have legal authority to do — agents have also been involved in scuffles with protesters who tried to prevent arrests.
Have any federal officers been injured?
In a July 22 court filing, the U.S. attorney’s office in Oregon said that 28 federal law enforcement officers had been injured during protests in Portland.
“The most serious injury to an officer to date occurred when a protester wielding a two-pound sledgehammer struck an officer in the head and shoulder when the officer tried to prevent the protester from breaking down a door to the Hatfield Courthouse,” the filing stated. Other injuries included “broken bones, hearing damage, eye damage, a dislocated shoulder, sprains, strains, and contusions.”
The Department of Homeland Security said in daily briefings about the protests that agents had been burned by fireworks and a “caustic substance” that were thrown over a fence surrounding the courthouse.
The legal filings and daily reports from the Department of Homeland Security do not make reference to one of the injuries described by Mr. Barr: that projectiles fired from pellet guns “have penetrated marshals to the bone.” On July 23, the White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany referenced a similar incident. “Another federal agent was shot with a pellet gun, leaving a wound deep to the bone,” she said. A Department of Homeland Security spokesman did not respond to a request for more information about this injury.
Mr. Barr emphasized the injuries sustained by federal officers and said that they outnumbered those incurred by protesters.
There is not a comprehensive tally of injured protesters, but at least five people have filed civil lawsuits describing injuries and seeking damages of up to $950,000. Other injuries, like those sustained by the Navy veteran, have been captured on video.
Groups of nurses and doctors have recently joined the protests, voicing objections to violence from the federal forces. Jillian Trent, an emergency room nurse who joined a recent march, said that she had seen an uptick of patients with injuries caused by rubber bullets and other police munitions. “People are coming in with their jaws falling off,” she said.

NYTimes roundup on protests Sat. across the country:
by artappraiser on Sun, 07/26/2020 - 3:43am
Trump looks pretty weak. He sends in troops and winds up looking like a bully. The protests continue and expand to other cities. This is documentation that Trump is the last person in the world capable of handling the situation. COVID deaths are increasing and he does nothing, People are suffering economically and his colleagues in Congress go home. Trump is his own worse enemy. The story the mayors will tell is that things were quieting down until he inflamed the situation.
by rmrd0000 on Sun, 07/26/2020 - 12:47pm
That's obvious in reports that numbers grew in some places in reaction to what he had done in Portland and some protests were enlarged in support.
But a reminder that Trump is not the original target of the protests. Police are, and mostly under rule of local governments run by Democrats. So getting rid of Trump will not at all solve what most protesters are upset about.
by artappraiser on Sun, 07/26/2020 - 4:52pm

Constantine says the closure will happen "as quickly as possible" .....activist groups like the No New Youth Jail Coalition have long argued that the juvenile detention facility is outdated, and disproportionately harms young Black and minority residents. Between January and June of 2017, 45 percent of the youth detained in King County were Black, despite only making up 8 percent of the county's youth. It's also been accused of being part of the "school-to-prison pipeline"..."
As quickly as possible wound up being yesterday. Who would've known?
by NCD on Sun, 07/26/2020 - 3:32pm
Thank you for looking that up.

Is this real or altered? Some New York protesters marching Saturday chant "fuck Joe Biden":

I still dont know what any of this has to do with George Floyd and Sandra Bland. Once again we've skipped past our recurring problem into some fantasy football/vid game arena.

Haven't you heard or seen BLM complaints about the Portland rioters stealing their thunder?

Clybutrn introduced a voting rights act bill in the House that honors John Lewis. The Republican Senate will not pass this bill. Republicans are the rate limiting step.

some fantasy football/vid game arena.
It's sick.

Ft. Sumter called - said attacks on federal facilities dont always go well. The Bastille was kind of a one-off, and even there a lot of people seemed to have lost their heads.

why not just go home, really? If you did that, it's a twofer, you're not following their instructions to head to the west and the north, you're still disobeying.
JUST GO HOME! What is the purpose of having to be on courthouse grounds? What does that have to do with Black Lives Matter? You guys just want to fight with someone from the Federal government for the heck of it, don't you? Reminds me of my brothers wanting to play army when they were little. They could probably still do a sound track for you.
