The rush toward the airport appears to reflect the increasing desperation of daily life in Afghanistan making a flight to an earthquake zone attractive. https://t.co/iMo5DslEjc
Marc Pierini, a former EU amb. to #Syria says “In the medium term, my guess is the West is going to normalize with the Syrian regime in one way or the other as well.”
The big thing that annoys me about the Qaddafi ordeal is post-9/11 he seemed to about-face in his behavior and attitude, tho i likely only know 1/10th of the story.
Of course resisting the Arab Spring reform movement was what most Arab leaders did - Qaddafi's demise was in part being less defended than Gulf states or Egypt, having Libya really 2 countries, having illusiionally attractive oil, and making it easy for western countries to act by threatening mass retaliation against civilians in a major city, oh, and having Libya part of the chaotic Saharan belt with all its warlords and chaos.
Assad largely just has his Russian ties at this point, and that out is closing.

....According to experts, it’s unusual for people to survive more than 100 hours trapped in the rubble as most of them are rescued within 24 hours.
Dr Sanjay Gupta told CNN that freezing temperatures in the earthquake zone might be a possible reason extending survival times for the trapped people.
“The cold weather is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it makes it very difficult, it is below freezing right now… On the other hand, it may reduce the demands for water. Perhaps that is playing into this,” he said....
