Attack takes place during festivities at rabbi’s home, say authorities, with suspect and getaway car later found

An attacker has stabbed five people during Hanukah festivities at a rabbi’s home in New York state.

The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council said an attacker wearing a scarf fled after stabbing the victims at a house in Monsey, Rockland county, about 30 miles north of New York City, on Saturday night.

All five victims were taken to hospital, the council said, and two were in critical condition with one of them stabbed at least six times. The local police chief, Brad Weidel, said New York City police officers later located a suspect and possible getaway vehicle connected with the stabbing.

Aron Kohn, 65, told the New York Times that he was inside the house when the stabbings occurred. “I was praying for my life,” said Kohn, 65. “He started attacking people right away as soon as he came in the door. We didn’t have time to react at all.” [....]

Suspect in Monsey Stabbings Searched Online for ‘Hitler,’ Charges Say

Officials said the suspect, who is charged with hate crimes, also expressed anti-Semitic views in his journal.

In his journal, prosecutors said, he referred to Hitler and “Nazi culture.” On his phone, he searched online at least four times for “why did Hitler hate the Jews” and looked for “prominent companies founded by Jews in America.”

Those details emerged as federal prosecutors filed hate crime charges on Monday against the man accused of stabbing five Jewish people at a Hanukkah celebration over the weekend in the New York suburbs.

In recent weeks, the criminal complaint said, the man, Grafton E. Thomas, had also searched for “German Jewish Temples near me,” and “Zionist Temples” in Elizabeth, N.J., and in Staten Island [....]

the viralness of it is perhaps the most disturbing thing to me, the young blacks with minor harassment seemingly doing it just for fun. Because humanity always has passionately vicious ideological haters around whether Osama bin Laden or Black Israelite Hebrews. It's that it seemingly seems a popular thing to do among a subset of kids, to make them feel they are above another tribe or something. Bullying the uncool kids in high school is one thing, ramping it up and focusing it on a whole tribe of people is another.

Early data suggests 60% of the attacks are by whites and 33% by blacks.

New York Police Department statistics for the first three quarters of 2019 document 45 arrests for anti-Jewish hate crimes in New York City. One third of those arrested were African-Americans, while 60% were white individuals.This represents a rate similar to that in 2018, when of the 69 arrests made for antisemitic hate crimes in New York, 40 of those arrested, or 57%, were white, and 25 of those arrested, or 36%, were black.
