Voting registration data indicates a stronger-than-usual flight from the G.O.P. since the Capitol riot, with an intensely fluid period in American politics now underway.
and it is noted many of them are not registering as Dem, they are unaffiliated so far
The only way this would have any real short-term impact would be if a handful of Republican senators switched at the same time and became a swing bloc in the chamber — giving the new party a pivotal role in politics. Barring that, it’s a long term plan at best. https://t.co/BLZLnOf6sp
“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” Haley, who served in her ambassador role under Trump, said. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”
Haley’s remarks are her strongest yet against the former president in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and come as Trump's legal team is set to present its defense of Trump on Friday in his second Senate impeachment trial [....]
She's so stupid she makes things worse for herself and all Republicans, which makes it hard to do the reasonable thing. Trump only has 1 path and he's followed it/blazed it since forever. "He let us down" means "we're stupid as dogshit and couldn't see the obvious". Which rather than "yes there's enough evidence to compete" it's "holy fuck I'm too stupid to hold office I'm going to get myself to a nunnery And hope they're still accepting idiots". And multiply that across the whole party. I mean, I'd like that, but the reality is they'll just vote against conviction rather than accept an equation that makes them former followers/acolytes deluded by Potato Satan. Unless deprogramming camps can be set up across the US quicker than vaccine stations.
@GOP super-lawyer Ted Olson said Senate has overwhelming evidence to convict Trump for inciting a deadly insurrection at the Capitol. He also will cut off donations to Republicans who refuse to convict Trump. cc @LeaderMcConnell https://t.co/i2l7Wltg06
If you don't know the name it's big stuff like ....Olson successfully represented presidential candidate George W. Bush in the Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore, which effectively ended the recount of the contested 2000 Presidential election...
“The GOP voters most likely to justify violence and express extremist anti-democratic ideas tend to be those also most receptive to the views that studies have shown are the best predictor of support for Trump: hostility to the demographic and cultural changes remaking America.” https://t.co/QnxMYueVaY
These Lincoln Project/Never Trump types obviously have the capacity to raise tens of millions of dollars yet they are absent from every electoral reform campaign for things like ranked choice voting or multimember districts that would make third parties viable. https://t.co/NDX2E3uYdG
Or maybe they've been raising awareness for how messed up the Republicans are, and someone else can step up to figure out this other stuff? Or maybe they'll do it next, after impeachment is more than 3 days behind us and the first wave of insurrection trials get going? I'm pissed at the woman with the mRNA vaccine - what's she done since?
good last line, hah. Like I said on a Biden post, I've learned not to think that way, I have learned bigotry of low expectations.
another thing: We really got used to "rapid change" only because it seemed like it, but it mostly wasn't real, the rapid news cycle was because Trump was causing chaos every other hour by constantly contradicting himself, his allies, his minions and even his fans. Really, remember how they couldn't ever get him to say anything they planned with him or agreed to? It was only when he was in big trouble then they would get him to stop tweeting and being contradictory on topic and read from a prepared text, and whenever he had to do that, he did it in a sing songy voice like a grade schooler. It became hard to actually focus on what the government really was doing. It mostly didn't involve him! (i.e., how many stories on what Pompeo was up to? Not many!)
Louise Mensch got popular through "the cavalry/Mueller is coming" to create continual expectations , but as Marcy and others point out, that's not how out justice system works - it will still be exceedingly unlikely that anyone from Trump's family is charged for anything. It takes political capital, will, and a huge amount of time, even as it threatens the career of anyone involved. Easier to catch a few tiny fish and go play golf.
This really stupid rich guy Fred Eshelman is pissed about the Trumpco grift over the election challenges and is suing to get his $2 million donation back:
”Trump’s campaign and the GOP collected $255 million, saying the money would support legal challenges to an election marred by fraud. Allies in Congress also raised money off false allegations, as did pro-Trump lawyers and even some of their witnesses.” https://t.co/leV3EcPtLZ
(Hot tip: don't invest with Eshelman Ventures, he's really stupid and doesn't research anything about money, probably the only thing he knows to do correctly is to have lawyers on retainer)
Omar has more on the "grifters using the Republican party to grift" angle:
Recall that emails solicited for an ‘Election Defense Fund’ but ”The fine print showed 75% of every contribution went to a new PAC which can be used to fund Trump’s political activities going forward. The other 25% was directed to the RNC.” https://t.co/pWl1QsaIu5
It’s a pattern. Politico researched 33 ‘Tea Party’ PACs. They “raised $43M, 74% from small donors. PACs spent $3M on ads & contributions to candidates, compared to $39M on operating expenses, like $6M to firms owned or managed by operatives who run PACs.” https://t.co/Apbz39Q2HC
.@jonathanchait asked: why more grift on right? His answer: “A tendency towards Manichaean thinking & rejection of neutral expertise. Every victory for Dems… is a twilight struggle to safeguard last flickering hopes for freedom from ravages of socialism.” https://t.co/QeJCFXH6Ms
Some of that tsunami of cash is simply opportunists capitalizing on post-election partisan anger. In 2016, Jill Stein raised ~$4.5 million for wishful recounts. In contrast to Trump, his allies & GOP fundraising, though, Stein’s efforts pale in comparison. https://t.co/B65Nt3xVDu
^ note that in the article by Chait, if Dems stress the Manichean "us vs. them" (or "blue vs. red" or "good vs. evil" only two sides) division narrative, as if there are no people in the middle or outside the two categories, you help the grifters.
IMO the big mystery continues to be: Why is Trump not using any of the media available to him? Has Fox News canceled him? Has Newsmax? Has Joe Rogan? https://t.co/a8ksZ9E78O
as per a comment above, now waiting for the whole cause of the split to speak. How will he do it?
(does come to mind, though--this is why the Senate was created! they are supposed to be the elite grownups who keep the rabble of the populist people from having too much power.)
The former president, breaking an unusually long silence, called the Senate minority leader a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” and called on Republicans in the chamber to find a new leader.
This move is equivalent to a U.S. president cutting a political deal with David Duke, the former KKK leader. Netanyahu and the ruling Likud party are legitimizing a racist, xenophobic and homophobic fringe party in hopes to reach a 61-seat majority. https://t.co/JBWePOubRL axios
