I found it educational to research the accuracy of claims Secretary Mayorkas made yesterday in his published statement about the situation at the border, so perhaps you will find the article educational: https://t.co/MObtJ86yEa
I wrote a thing for @ForeignPolicy on how Biden's medium-to-long term approach to managing the #border situation looks increasingly like the #EU's failed strategy since 2015. Takeaway: we need to stop externalizing #asylum & deal w/ our issues at home.https://t.co/M7Anuu6ssb
A cottage industry of Biden worriers.
1) the US is not the EU, so the centralized Presidential actions are a lot more straightforward & deterministic than a compromise between 27 sovereign states + Brussels.
2) Biden is not Trump, nor Obama, so cataloguing the failures since 2014 probably isn't that helpful.
3) there's no Syrian War south of the border (nor LIbyan civil war/anarchy in the desert - just the usual cartels and such. So there's no existential crisis that we're solving, or that they're fleeing for the most part.
4) Biden's been in office what, a whole 8 weeks? chill the fuck out. Even whatever he does now shouldn't be considered his last move.
The number of migrant children in U.S. custody has passed 15,000, CBS News reported Saturday.
Records reviewed by the network showed that the government has about 15,500 unaccompanied migrant minors in U.S. custody. Over 5,000 unaccompanied minors are currently held in a tent holding facility run by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other stations along the U.S.-Mexico Border as of Saturday morning.
Mark Weber, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed to CBS that HHS is housing nearly 10,500 unaccompanied minors in emergency housing facilities and shelters licensed by states.
The news outlet reported that unaccompanied migrant children are spending 136 hours on average in CBP custody, passing the legal time limit of 72 hours.
CBS further reported that border officials have encountered over 500 unaccompanied minors per day over the past 21 days. The number of encounters are expected to top the 9,400 minors that entered custody in February. [....]
There's a new kind of family separation happening at the border. U.S. agents are no longer tearing children from their parents, but Biden's policy of letting in only minors means parents are making painful decisions just on the other side of the border. https://t.co/OWeonkMoVk
President Biden has asked Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the administration’s efforts to tackle the politically complex migrant issue, senior officials said Wednesday.
Interesting note today:
Senate Republicans literally running out of the Senate to catch their flight to the border
as Everett warned above in his tweet, there are now 18 GOP Senators at the border giving press conferences:
It’s always frustrating to me that Democrats aren’t more imaginative and theatrical in terms of their efforts to drive attention to issues that they think they have the upper hand on.
Friday at almost 8:30 pm, Biden's DHS announces it will do a formal regulation for DACA (procedure has been at the center of the legal fight over it for some time) pic.twitter.com/OfYUelfLqX
The administration is projecting it will need more than 35,500 beds for migrant children and teenagers by the end of May, according to internal government documents. https://t.co/wK3wzg0yMT w/ @mirjordan
Portland again. Trump or Biden, all the same to them. Looks like the plan is: attack federal ICE facility in Portland the same way every night for the rest of their lives?
Last night at Portland's ICE HQ around 100 protesters gathered outside the building with chants of "What's outrageous? Kids in cages!".
The anti-ICE protesters built a fire to block the HQ's main entrance and set plywood, built to protect the building from protests, ablaze.
DHS officers responded after the plywood caught fire and pushed protesters back with pepperball rounds. Firefighters put out the flames at the building while officers kept the crowd back, occasionally firing pepperballs at protesters feet and threatening to use pepper spray.
DHS officers retreated back into the building as protesters yelled "Move back!". The damaged plywood was then ripped from the building and a glass door at the ICE HQ was shattered.
The crowd began dispersing after this.
NEW: Biden will sign an order today to keep the number of refugee admissions this year at the historically low figure set by the Trump administration, walking back a campaign promise to raise the cap, a senior administration official confirmed to Axios. https://t.co/RMkPYkrl0A
It's not so much that there's a logical relationship between the two issues as that it all came out of the same transition portfolio, Biden feels that portfolio was mishandled, so now it's back to his earlier policy commitment.
