Perhaps the increasingly popular premise, that to air a belief is to normalize it, renders a society least able to contest wrongheaded ideas precisely when it is most vital.
Friedersdorf makes many good points here. I particularly like his point that actively advocating for or against something does not need to be validated by the logic of accepted practices. All kinds of bad activities are already accepted as normal in the sense that they keep happening.
