striking statement from the synopsis:

....individuals living under gang control have significantly worse education, wealth, and less income than individuals living only 50 meters away in areas not controlled by gangs. None of these discontinuities existed before the arrival of gangs from the US. The results are not determined by exposure to violence, lower provision of public goods, or selective migration away from gang locations. We argue that our findings are mostly driven by gangs restricting residents’ mobility and labor choices....

[....] At the sentencing Thursday, Walowski noted the many letters sent in by Dorsey’s supporters.

“You are highlighted as a great father,” she said. “Yet you were found guilty of taking a child away from a mother that it doesn’t seem will ever be able to recover from that.”

Prosecutors argued that Dorsey, a reputed Four Corner Hustlers street gang member, could have been sentenced to as many as 109 years in prison for the slaying.

Both prosecutors and the defense noted that Dorsey had a relatively stable upbringing and a devoted family.

“He had a lot to live for, and all he did was go out there and gangbang,” Assistant State’s Attorney Nina Ricci said [....]
