One of the common things in Haiti now is mob lynchings of criminals because the general public doesn't think police are doing enough about them. In absence of state you don't have absence of violence. https://t.co/aQTrthO2XS
Japan used to have a homicide rate closer to what America has today, they got it reduced by 4-5x. So if anything Japan is an optimistic story. I don't know about the video below but I've been told if you commit a crime in Japan you expect to be caught. https://t.co/7piennNWU7
The issue with El Salvador is what Bukele is doing is a short-term fix that doesn't get to the root problems and is bound to backfire along with being against civil rights and human rights.

It may be the case but in absence of alternative you can see why people rally to him
I spent ~20 months in Haiti after the 2010 Earthquake. Even back then, people were saying that there was too much lawlessness and wanted a return of a strongman leader to stamp out crime. Some were looking back on Duvalier and said at least you could walk the streets
Dictators are never the answer and yes most people know why El Salvador's "president" is popular. The US president tomorrow could cut crime to North Korean or Japanese levels. You want the same methods used?
