Poor Hillary, she says what's on most people's minds or pops the mental balloons of the fabulists on the left - this won't buy her too many friends, but at least she's not running for anything (aside from Cassandra).
[ETA - except the NYTimes says Europe's already lowering immigration - so why's The Guardian complaining about her heartlessness - just more Hillary hostilité?]
thank you for pointing to the NYT article, I saw it but didn't read it. I read it now and see this little tidbit:
Behind the scenes, the Obama administration encouraged Europe’s hard-line approach, in meetings with Ms. Merkel and her counterpart in Rome, Matteo Renzi, Italy’s prime minister at the time.
After Ms. Merkel initially extended a warm welcome to the newcomers, Mr. Obama told her in late 2015 that if she didn’t take a tougher, but necessary, stance, she and the European Union would be through.
“Angela, you’ve got to get real or it’s over,” Mr. Obama said, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation, who added that Ms. Merkel responded, “Barack, I can’t believe I’m agreeing with you.
In October 2016, Mr. Obama had a similar message for Mr. Renzi, who had become a liberal model in Europe for his humanitarian approach to migrants.
During a meeting at the White House in October 2016, Mr. Obama told him “you must put a limit,” on the numbers he took in, according to a person who was present at the meeting.
A spokesman for Mr. Obama declined to comment.
Yet in practice, Ms. Merkel and Mr. Renzi and their centrist counterparts needed little encouragement.
I have no doubt Hillary knows all of this. She's saying what she's saying now with a specific political effect in mind, whatever that is. Therefore, I wouldn't say "poor Hillary".
Right-wing populists on both sides of the Atlantic continue to use the immigration issue — and to misrepresent it — hoping to deepen their political inroads. With elections for the European Parliament looming next May, the lingering fears about migration on the Continent are likely to be exploited all the more, analysts warn.
“The story populists sell is very loosely related to facts,” said Gerald Knaus, a migration expert who is the founding chairman of the European Stability Initiative, a Berlin-based research group.
Maybe Hillary is trying to set a goal for the new Democratic House where they, along with her, refuse to accept the labelling as "leftist open border elites"? As the Times' article also notes, there are the elections for European Parliament in spring....
Yes, she's not stupid nor poor, and I'm sure she's taking the sacrifice to mark out new territory so existing candidates and politicians don't have to. Hillary the trial balloon/decoy.
And the counterargument I hear is "to get where I am, I've had to kiss a lot of ass - right on the lips!"
It should be said that this isn't really new territory. It has long been the position of the majority of democrats, even many of the liberal democrats. Very few are advocates of open borders or the new far left view that ICE should be abolished. Given where I live near the border I work closely and often with No More Deaths and the Samaritans. Even among these hard core advocates for human rights on the border it's only the fringe among them that want open borders.
