Too much is being read into that NY Times map. If I recall correctly the distance traveled metric is > 2 miles. Does it even account for population densities? I live in the Metro Atlanta area so not sparsely populated. My grocery store is over 2 miles from my house. There is one nearer but it clocks right at 2 miles. Outside metro areas, distances are even farther to the nearest stores. Maybe using the distance to the nearest Walmart would be a better metric for those areas.
