Some of the reporting in this is astonishing, and one has to wonder if Trump's plan to install Patel as CIA dep director/acting director in December was linked to the advice he was getting on how to stage a coup https://t.co/amniMFeAvh
How does this relate to Trump's efforts at the time to overturn the election, one wonders
"On Dec. 12, while Trump was attending the Army-Navy football game, he discussed with top aides a sensitive future assignment for Patel, one person recalled."https://t.co/amniMFeAvh
Looking at the WH pool reports from Trump's travel to the Army Navy game on Dec. 12. "POTUS was followed by White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, WH personnel director John McEntee, & DNI John Ratcliffe (who was also seen milling about outside the South Portico shortly before
"the president emerged)."...
"POTUS arrives on the field at 14:59...
He walks up to about halfway line with officers from the two services on either side. also acting Defense Sec Miller, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Milley."
Further 12/12 WH pool reports: "With about 3 min left in the first quarter, POTUS took off mask & descended stairs heading inside the stadium, as if to go to a suite."...
"POTUS left his seat in Navy sec. at 16:09...We are leaving about an hour earlier than schedule on guidance
So whoever Trump discussed his plans for Patel with at the Army Navy game, he then leaves the game an hour earlier than scheduled, before half time. Flies back to WH. No one comes back to talk to press on plane. Doesn't say anything to press upon arrival at WH.
In an interview Patel gave in Feb. that Ignatius references, he expresses frustration that a report he helped write was not declassified before Trump left office. But the piece quotes from the doc Patel has been complaining is still classified.
1 of the most chilling things about the astonishing Ignatius piece today on Trump Patel machinations is that he reported an awful lot of what we now understand as the coup plot it links to back on Dec. 26, a couple wks before Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol https://t.co/PeUMf4J9jj
Ignatius, 12/26: “Not to be alarmist, but we should recognize that the US will be in the danger zone until the formal certification of Joe Biden’s election victory on Jan. 6, because potential domestic and foreign turmoil could give Pres. Trump an excuse to cling to power.” pic.twitter.com/vXlUpuhK47
he did not bury the lede. paragraph 2. again, dec. 26. translation. Republicans think there is a Trump coup plot to overturn the election. The big showdown is Jan. 6. https://t.co/PeUMf4J9jjpic.twitter.com/7SHj21zoCd
Ignatius Dec. 26 clearly already had been told Patel was abruptly brought back to Washington in early Dec. as part of a seeming potential coup like plot, involving him being shoehorned in to take over CIA or FBI https://t.co/PeUMf4J9jjpic.twitter.com/ZjlgHrdZVi
Ignatius on Dec. 26 foretold many elements of Trump coup plot, and that the showdown would occur on Jan. 6. He also predicted it would not succeed. https://t.co/PeUMf4J9jjpic.twitter.com/7aGzF5gyQf
So much of what Ignatius reported in his astonishing Patel piece today, he had already reported Dec. 26, on a seeming Trump coup plot that would erupt on Jan. 6. Ignatius reported it in the WashPost. How did the FBI & other law enforcement and intel agencies miss the threat?
DOJ says Roger Stone hid money from the IRS, allowing him to "fund a lavish lifestyle despite owing nearly $2 million in unpaid taxes, interest, and penalties." pic.twitter.com/oMf6RIrVFk
Carter Page bit was minor - the FBI guy thought Page no longer active agent, thought it a mistake and wrote it in instead if checking (b/tho Page was getting Russian info and not reporting it). Changed nothing, he pled guilty to a minor offense, and conservatives fluffed it up as major deal - including using ever reliable Aaron Maté it seems.
Marcy will have more to say on the Grenell investigation I'm sure, but it was basically designed to embarrass Biden despite no there there - usual Republican stuff, but too outré for even Barr to sign off on, which pissed Trump off.
