“Tonight, voters in Kentucky sent a message loud and clear for everyone to hear,” Mr. Beshear said. “It’s a message that says our elections don’t have to be about right versus left, they are still about right versus wrong.”
in this kind of situation:
Mr. Bevin’s troubles did not appear to be a drag on other Republicans, who captured every other statewide race in Kentucky — a sign that Kentucky voters were rejecting Mr. Bevin and not his party.
and do note that Afro-Americans can win if they are not liberals. It's not always about race, some states are just not liberal
Daniel Cameron handily won the attorney general’s race, becoming the first African-American to claim the office and the first Republican to do so in over 70 years.
Again, as Luntz pointed out, Trump still has 50%+ approval rating in the state. One thing that's necessary with Trump still around: to appeal to the suburban swings who don't like the tribalism Trump is stoking in the country.
Republicans test-drove their core 2020 message in Kentucky—impeachment, socialism, resistance, referendum on Trump—and are struggling in a deep-red state.
Off-year governor elections in KY bear little no resemblance to presidential/Senate race results.
New Trump campaign statement on Kentucky elections: “The President just about dragged Gov. Matt Bevin across the finish line, helping him run stronger than expected in what turned into a very close race at the end. A final outcome remains to be seen.” pic.twitter.com/BQbdjWSyc3
[....] The issue became a key one during the race between Beshear and Bevin [....]
[....] "In my first week in office I am going to rescind this governor's Medicaid waiver," Beshear said in his speech claiming victory on Tuesday night.
The Trump administration approved Bevin's request last year to require some Medicaid beneficiaries work as a condition for receiving benefits.
However, the requirements have not taken effect because of ongoing litigation. Under the proposal, beneficiaries who gained coverage under the state's Medicaid expansion would have to work, volunteer or go to school 20 hours a week to retain their benefits [.....]
They'll still have a heap of trouble accessing any providers that take Medicaid, but that's another thing...
This is one of Trump’s most frequent genres of post-election false claims. Whether his candidate won or lost, he says they’d gained some wildly absurd number of points because of his intervention on their behalf. pic.twitter.com/PGvl0uHd3t
Really underappreciated that the anti-democratic strand in contemporary GOP politics has nothing in particular to do with Trump. https://t.co/VZWyq6CjdY
That seems fair and definitely not hypocritical. Remember when republicans said that most of the votes for Buchanan in a mostly Jewish city in Florida were likely errors and were intended to be votes for Gore therefore Gore would have clearly won Florida and the presidential election?
Great KY stuff here. Bottom line: “Overall, Beshear’s performance in the cities and suburbs suggests that the education divide that has expanded during the Trump era is alive and well - and that Republicans still have room to fall among college-educated voters in suburban areas” https://t.co/4xIWV41i64

Labeling Beshear a socialist failed.

Especially because he's an extreme moderate who went out of his way to court rural districts.

Here's how you accomplish that. From NYTimes' report Democrats Win Control in Virginia and Claim Narrow Victory in Kentucky Governor’s Race

Immediate messaging to the poor rural citizens who voted for him: the fear of this happening will no longer hang over your head:
