Obama didn't have the courage to sit with the baseball fans he went to a Nats game disguised as a player. Trump's crowd was bigger, noisier. No matter where Trump goes, there he is.
A pallbearer at Elijah Cummings' funeral refuses to shake Mitch McConnell's hand.
Rankin told The Post that his brother did not receive the veterans' benefits he was entitled to before he died. And while Cummings "reached across party lines trying to help my brother get his military benefits," including to McConnell, Rankin said he blamed McConnell in part for his brother's death.
“I could not put my hands in the man’s hand who refused to help somebody who served his country,” Rankin said, later adding, “I couldn’t do it because I was thinking about my brother.”
was a baseball game, not a political rally lead by a president or a candidate for president, and as Nate Silver says:
There should be more booing at sporting events in general. Players, umpires, politicians, you name it. Booing is the funnest thing about attenting a sporting event. https://t.co/V8YTgZhIRZ
I.E. "out with da bums". It's where people get to get rowdy and partisan about teams which are created to instigate fandom, because it's a game. Entertainment.
Likewise the funeral was a social function.
Don't see much equivalence. If anything, the baseball crowd was ridiculing and parodying Trump's own "go-low" modus operandi, at politiical rallies. And arts and sports and comic events and social events is where that works best. Not exactly eye for an eye.
This president plays his official role like an entertainer for fans for the purposes of ratings and ego gratification. I see nothing good about his opponents doing the same thing. For my elected president and other representatives, I prefer them to "go high" and not run poliltical rallies and other things like governing and legislating like a baseball game or pep rally.
If Trump hadn't surrounded himself with sociopaths, idiots, felons like Mulvaney, Stephanie Greaseball and assorted toadies and grifters, he would have come with 14 kids Barrons age from 3-4 different DC schools, and not the 14 kiss ass Republican politicians.
The stadium video would show him with the kids. The crowd would have been shocked Trump thought of somebody but himself, in bringing schoolchildren, and there would have been no boos. That is public relations, all he has is unqualified jerks and azzholes who tell him he's a genius.
I saw more than a few point out-where the fuck is your teenage son Barron, don't you get it , that's exactly what you are supposed to do, bring your teenage son--but it didn't hit me until you said what you said how warped what he's doing there.
You know, I think back to his pre-presidential days, he only seemed to do the pro wrestling thing for fun, and maybe boxing, but all the other stuff, like the Yankees, he used as a schmooze/network with the owners thing, like Steinbrenner. Not interested in the game and players really, didn't use it for its Norman Rockwell P.R. potential. He doesn't get that kind of P.R.? Ironically, with a slogan like MAGA he doesn't get the "American as apple pie" thing? He gets only the kafaybe kind of stuff, and somehow his fans intuit that, there is some kind of link there on how he handles this kind of thing? Only interested in courting favor with the powerful in the private boxes.
I think you are right that if he acted more like a normal fan many people might not have joined in. He was just so blatantly "Trump as Trump in yo face" here.

This is similar to McConnell blocking aid to the first responders on 911

great point, very interesting to me.
