Oh yeah, McCain is really laying into Trump. I just read this article.
“One aspect of the (Vietnam) conflict by the way that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain — a former Navy pilot — said. “That is wrong. That is wrong.
So he is proud of it. The whole clip is a surprisingly subtle view, including on the protests. Surprising to me at least as I often find him more hawkish sounding.
Your quote is stated quite emphatically and the "wrong" is followed by "If we are going to ask every American to serve, then every American should serve".
Senator John McCain and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly offered starkly different visions of service—and of America.
By Eliot A. Cohen @ The Atlantic, Oct. 22
[....] But the speeches that will last—that historians will recall, that will live well beyond the moment—were delivered by two badly wounded warriors, one torn in body, the other in spirit. Senator John McCain, bearing the wounds of years of torture in a North Vietnamese prison, with an incurable cancer in his future, spoke while receiving a medal. John Kelly, grieving for his son lost in battle and for others like him, surprised and stunned reporters in a White House press conference. Their contrasting visions of this country, of military service, and of our future bear reflection [....]
It's amazing how often paraphrasing Bill's famous quote comes in handy: it all depends upon what your definition of a troop is AND then furthermore it all depends upon what your definition of support the troops is.
You know it's strange looking back over watching this meme played since "the blogosphere" ramped up only a couple years after Clinton left office. Because everyone in the left of the sphere hated Bushco dragging us in Iraq so much, they likewise not just loathed the whole "support the troops" game,a game actually meant to torture Clintonites, meant to hark back to supposed dissing of Vietnam vets. But by the time we got Obama, this strange switch seemed to happen. Because Mr. and Mrs. Obama, as loathe as they might be to like, wear flag pins, at least at the start, seemed to genuinely, genuinely want to put military life and the military families on a pedestal, from the getgo. As in: they actually seemed to admire the life. So all these liberals that once loathed the support the troops game, since they liked the Obamas, were all of a sudden "supporting the troops". And now we got generals in the White House that all Breitbart'ers are being taught to despise.
Even Hollywood couldn't do this culture flip flopping this fast. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was all Tom Hanks' fault....
And Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford promised to ‘double my efforts’ to get Congress more information on the ambush.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Monday seized on the deadly ambush in Niger to call for a new congressional authorization for U.S. military operations overseas.
McCain told reporters Monday that he and the Armed Services panel’s top Democrat, Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, are working on a proposal to update the broad war powers Congress gave the commander in chief after the 9/11 terrorist attacks [....]
“We’re going to have to have” an updated authorization for the use of military force, said McCain, who has previously called for a new war powers resolution [....]

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took aim at the current political environment, including apparent veiled swipes at President Trump, during a speech on Monday night.
"We have to fight against propaganda and crackpot conspiracy theories. We have to fight isolationism, protectionism, and nativism. We have to defeat those who would worsen our divisions," McCain said at the Brigade of Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman added that "we have to remind our sons and daughters that we became the most powerful nation on earth by tearing down walls, not building them."

Thanks. I checked and see he Re-tweeted a 2:19 min. video of that on his own feed:

I like this meme, even though I don't agree with everything he sees, it's extremely thought-provoking:
Two Wounded Warriors
Senator John McCain and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly offered starkly different visions of service—and of America.

The follow through (a priority before he can't do it no more, I imagine?):
McCain calls for war powers debate after Niger attack
And Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford promised to ‘double my efforts’ to get Congress more information on the ambush.
