The whistleblower who leaked Michael Cohen’s financial records is stepping forward to say why: records of bigger, potentially more sensitive, swaths of suspicious transactions appeared to be missing from a government database. My @newyorker investigation: https://t.co/5nR2CHNOUc
This is a remarkable story. I've never heard of SARs reports going missing. Some plausible explanations are spelled out in the story, but these are clearly rare. And that a US official was concerned enough to leak, and then admit to leaking to draw attention to this, says a lot.
Two amazing things about this @RonanFarrow story: 1) an apparent law enforcement official came forward as the source of the leak of Cohen's financial records 2) source apparently was motivated by files missing from the Treasury database. https://t.co/njD1kdP4ge
I’ve been thinking about this New Yorker story on SARs missing from a FINCEN database and I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade here, but color me at least a little bit skeptical. Here’s why. /1/
He's obviously right that no matter what happened to the SARS reports in the database, the original reasons for them/details are still cataloged by the banks. Their files are far more thorough - and likely already in the hands of investigators. If they (reports) disappeared nefariously ... well, that'll be fun to find out!
The payment by Michael Cohen, the president’s personal attorney, to the porn star was made in the last weeks before the 2016 presidential election, meant to ensure Daniels would not speak about the alleged affair publicly.
