Murder of Gdańsk mayor highlights Poland's polarization: Adamowicz was a high-profile liberal critic of the ruling right-wing Law and Justice, and supported issues like gay rights and accepting asylum seekers. https://t.co/2ittBlpCy6
There's certainly (from my little analysis) some tension between left & right movements in Poland, including the strongest anti-abortion sentiment in Europe and the normal regional conflicts, and I can imagine that not all events like this have to be correlated to spring loose a conflict laying in waiting, but in this case it seemed the nationalist opposition/ruling party came out truly sympathetic rather than taking advantage of the situation. Would that only happen in America.

Not so much - the guy was a violent criminal who blamed the mayor for putting him away before.
