“You know, it just makes a hard life harder. That's all.” On top of everything, New York’s small businesses are getting hit with lawsuits in droves — for owed back rent. https://t.co/UZKk3g1VDu
Some of these people have been through pure hell since March, one thing after another after another, like the Book of Job. The psychological pressure of being between a rock and a hard place is enormous, sometimes I think it is better to be homeless and begging on the streets as at least then you are free of responsibility to others, the temptation of just walking away must be great.
edit to add: there's a popular holiday movie, starts with an attempted suicide saved by an angel, It's A Wonderful Life! where the angel shows Jimmy Stewart what the town would be like if he had never been born. That's what parts of NYC are like now- empty, bleak, grey, a reduced number of people in poor moods just going through motions.
a reminder of how many big cities use them to balance the budget by taxing them for all kinds of things:
Also this is important point from Manuel’s. Restaurants are expected to pay liquor license fees all at once. This is a huge expense to payout at one time. It was a bad idea before but cities should be waving or deferring liquor license fees if they don’t want restaurants to close pic.twitter.com/BeDrlK5FUw
Manuel's Tavern, a favored dig of Atlanta politicians (a favorite of Jimmy Carter), is on the verge of closing. We really have lost so many treasured businesses during this time https://t.co/7bzWBVVGaH
on the jazz clubs and other music venues of NYC going down:
Music venues throughout the city say they are hanging by a thread after being shuttered for nearly 9 months, with scant revenue or government relief. Jazz Standard, a noted club on East 27th St, is just one of them. https://t.co/DAUkBGwbCz
