MURDER, POLITICS, AND THE END OF THE JAZZ AGE
by Michael Wolraich
Account of Obama to fundraisers into an open mike, recounting his version of a budget talks exchange.
One reaction I have to this: I would not use the word "sneaky" to describe the GOP's efforts to advance its agenda through the most recent budget talks. Nothing too subtle about it. Perhaps the biggest decisions they make are how much to try to bite off at each opportunity where they can threaten to shut down the government or crash the global economy unless they get concessions. What no one can doubt is that whatever they don't get in a given round, they'll come back and try to bite off another chunk in the next one. That's the way these folks operate. They're very determined and methodical when they don't absurdly overrreach. They'll keep at it until they get taken out to the woodshed publicly, like Gingrich did in the mid-90s. And then they'll back off for a time, maybe Robespierre a leader or two with the political equivalent of extreme prejudice, and then come back at it again...
