Forty-two years ago, The Chronicle’s Jack Epstein gave the Unabomber travel advice, after the famed terrorist read his book about a journey through South America.https://t.co/VCViWATzsz
Also I've been meaning to read more from this on the just released 9/11 records, haven't got to it yet, hope to get to it tonight:
Last Saturday, on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the FBI declassified a document that could transform everything that we think we know about the Saudi govt's alleged links to the attacks.
The doc concerns Omar al-Bayoumi, who lunched with two hijackers in Feb 2000. He found them a place in San Diego, advanced them rent $, and intro'd them to a friend who helped them apply to flight school.
The 28 pages are more skeptical of Bayoumi's claim that he met the hijackers by chance. "There are indications in the files that his encounter with the hijackers might not have been accidental."
This is from the new doc: "Bayoumi's statements are directly contradicted by eyewitness statements." In other words, in the FBI's view, he was lying.
Why did it take 20 YEARS to find this out? And if Bayoumi's lunch with the hijackers was pre-arranged, what might that mean? /5 pic.twitter.com/7AieDQTfjt
A few more facts about Bayoumi. His salary came from the Saudi military. Some FBI officials believed he was a spy.
In Aug 2001, the month before the attacks, B. left the US with his family. That same year, the authorities found a drawing—of a plane—at his house in the UK.. /6 pic.twitter.com/4Upz9NDyaD
Again, we didn't find out about the Plane Drawing until 2020, thanks to this@propublica/@NYTmag feature. It wasn't confirmed by the court record until 2021.
That's right, it took TWENTY YEARS to find out about the drawing *and* the hijacker lunch.. /7 https://t.co/WQBuekQI9j
Read that story. You'll see that there were a lot of people INSIDE the government who wanted to keep chasing down these troubling threads. There were other dissenting voices inside the 9/11 Commission, who thought the report was too soft on the Saudi government... /8 pic.twitter.com/nKYq80hg7M
(That screencapis from "The Commission," by Philip Shenon.) My point is, asking hard questions about Saudi- links to 9/11 isn't a "conspiracy theory." A lot of troubling evidence has surfaced over the years. Bayoumi is the most notable thread, but there are many others... /9
Click here and download the new doc. Read about Bayoumi's associate at the consulate, Fahad al-Thumairy. Read about his friend Osama Bassnan. Read about the party Bassnan threw in DC for the man who was convicted of planning the first WTC attack... /10 https://t.co/q27DJoaYXs
It's hard to blame people who want to "do their own research" when the govt's official attempts to investigate the most consequential disaster of our lifetimes is so incomplete.
