HEY CAPTAIN BLIGH and minions: Involving the military in election disputes would cross into dangerous territory
All 10 living former defense secretaries write a joint warning that involving the military in election disputes would cross into dangerous territory https://t.co/wBscIdUpaS
I wonder if this joint statement by former secretaries of defense is a response to rumors that Trump and acting SecDef Christopher Miller may be plotting something desperate. I believe that in a crisis, military officers would obey their oaths, not Trump.
The fact that the former secretaries of defense are unnerved enough to write this statement is itself alarming. Former SecDefs don't lightly mess with successors. They apparently fear that Trump will use the military to try to steal the election or impede the transition.
After Mike Flynn endorses idea that Trump should impose martial law and suspend the constitution, America's top soldier, Gen. Mark Milley, says of the US military: "we are determined to defend US constitution, no one should doubt that.” https://t.co/asuOttRTpw
The military oath that I and every enlisted person and officer had to publicly state out loud reads:
"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."
There are historic reasons that "support and defend the Constitution" come before "obey the orders of the President." In basic training there was a class where it was explained that we have a duty to disobey unconstitutional orders. Likely because of My Lai massacre and the prosecution of Lt. Calley. I'm sure that officers get more extensive training in this area than enlisted people. I was just obeying orders is not a legitimate defense.
note the authors include Dick Cheney & Don Rumsfeld! complete list:
Opinion by Ashton Carter, Dick Cheney, William Cohen, Mark Esper, Robert Gates, Chuck Hagel, James Mattis, Leon Panetta, William Perry and Donald Rumsfeld
Stewart Baker, former general counsel of the NSA and former assistant secretary for policy at DHS, filed a comment in the FinCEN rulemaking criticizing the rushed midnight process https://t.co/vYd57AthGK
