Pakistani Supreme Court Ousts Premier

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The Supreme Court dismissed Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday, drastically escalating a confrontation between the government and the judiciary and plunging the political system into turmoil.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry declared that Mr. Gilani’s office had been effectively vacant since April 26 when the court convicted him on contempt charges because he refused to pursue a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari, his superior.

Although the decision is unlikely to topple the government, many viewed it as the product of a grudge-driven tussle between Mr. Zardari and Justice Chaudhry, with the prime minister caught in the middle [....]

Raja Pervez Ashraf has defied expectations to become Pakistan's 25th prime minister.

The former Water and Power Minister has long been controversial. He's widely seen as corrupt for his alleged role in the rental of power projects, earning him the nickname Raja Rental.
Ashraf is also closely associated with the current energy crisis that has crippled the country and sparked widespread and violent protests.

The new prime minister disappoints in other ways too. Many had hoped Yusuf Raza Gilani's replacement would restore calm after months of conflict between the government and the judiciary, but President Asif Ali Zardari's decision to pick him as the new leader almost guarantees the row will continue [....]
