Democratic lawmakers’ letter calls for direct U.S. talks with Russia
In a letter led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the 30 Democrats call on Biden to pair the unprecedented economic and military support the U.S. is providing Ukraine with a “diplomatic push, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire.” https://t.co/wp51wKPS8O
This infuriates me! The only acceptable negotiated settlement is the complete and uncontested re-establishment of the sovereign borders of Ukraine. This is the position of the recognized elected government of the people of Ukraine. The USA has no business negotiating anything!
I usually agree with the members of the Progressive Caucus who signed the letter to Biden on Ukraine, but this letter is worse than useless. It will have the opposite of its intended effect. Here's why: 1/x
2/x far from shortening the war, I view it as a certainty that this letter will make its way to Russian state media within the next day or two as evidence of fracturing solidarity among politicians in Biden's own party for his support of Ukraine.
3/x it will further encourage Putin that his long-term strategy of keeping the war going until US domestic resolve breaks or a Putin-friendly politician wins the presidency is viable, and Russian propaganda media will work overtime to convince the public that it is viable.
4/x to further this fracturing, Russia will attempt to continue to disrupt global energy supplies and Ukrainian food exports, because the Progressive Caucus just told Putin that these things were creating domestic pressure in the United States.
5/x The letter just told Putin and Lavrov that their strategy is working. They now have incentive to conduct further atrocities in Ukraine, do even more damage to global supply chains, and keep that war machine going as long as they can.
6/6 the Progressive Caucus members thought they were trying to shorten the war. But if anything, they just prolonged it It was a baffling, severe foreign policy blunder that risks long-term consequences.
btw, A.O.C. signed the letter along with all the other members of 'The Squad.' (They are not really loyal members of the Democratic party at all, but deeply invested in advancing the fortunes of the Democratic Socialists of America party, of which A.O.C. is a full-fledged member.) Just another data point for what JusticeDemWatch said here: AOC 'ATTACKING AND UNDERMINING' JOE BIDEN. If you are a loyal Democrat (I'm not, I'm an Independent) you really shouldn't trust her to be a team player. She's not one, just sayin'
After just 24 hours, members of the congressional progressive caucus withdrew their letter urging the President to seek a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
....My own initial read of the letter was that one group of signatories had worked with an outside group, the Quincy Institute, on a letter calling for a push for a ceasefire. Others among the signatories weren’t really prepared to do that and insisted on adding various commitments to Ukraine’s independence and no actions not supported by Ukraine. Unable to agree on these points they piled both conflicting positions into one letter and signed it. More generally, I think there are people in the Progressive Caucus who simply weren’t comfortable with a position indistinguishable from the rest of their party and indeed from many more mainstream Republicans. But the fallout from the release of the letter shows a clumsiness and obtuseness I would not have expected from members like Rep. Jayapal or Jamie Raskin or Ro Khanna....
I heard tonight that the CPC initially hoped in June that it would get scores of signatures and it fell flat, so the plan was to set it for release when it reached 30 signatures. That happened on Monday and CPC pressed the button, without the signatories being able to stop it. https://t.co/TSe76lSQWo
.@RadioFreeTom Tom, it would be great if you could write a short expose on Quincy Institute, as it is cofounded by #IranLobby members. I can't think of anyone better to shed some light on it. Quincy has been in the spotlight of Iranians since the start of #IranRevolution. https://t.co/Cg9TQojaCr
