Op-ed by Karen J. Tumulty @ WashingtonPost.com, Jan. 6
It is time for Republicans to face an uncomfortable but increasingly obvious truth.
President Trump is just not that into you.
He never has been.
To Trump, the party of Lincoln was a rental vehicle, one that he took for a joyride and is getting ready to turn back in, with trash jammed under the seats and stains covering the upholstery. Also, the tank is empty, and there’s a crack in the windshield [....]
Lindsey Graham is moving on, he has chosen to change the subject. He tweeted this 5 minutes ago. I would be willing to bet this is a poll tested action as advised by political consultants and that the editors at The Federalist are onboard, that it is a fruitful way to attack the incoming administration as a minority party in Congress:
Cities that have reduced their police budgets - and declared war on the police themselves - are seeing tremendous spikes in crime & loss of business.
Note the sub headline: If you want to know what the real-time self-destruction of a city looks like under Democrats’ dangerous ideology, Minneapolis offers the perfect model.
"The Squad" in general is going to be a favorite whipping boy, whatever they say or promote will be played up as representing Biden and his administration.
Helping the effort along will be if BLM-type movements continue to attack Democratic mayors and Democratic city administrations.
Possibly related that Keisha Lance Bottoms is treated as equal of Stacey Abrams in Biden Transition kudos? I wouldn't put it beyond them to be that savvy and forward looking as they and Biden have managed to navigate a incredibly difficult situation awesomely so far. Preparing the ground to pre-empt a reply of a shocking 1994 red landslide after a Clinton/Gore 1992 sweep?
do you realize that you are saying that as if the Republicans are unified on a thread about them being devastatingly divided? Your Peter-Pan-like belief in two unified parties of loyal adherents in this country is just incredible sometimes. You cling to it almost like Trumpies cling to their delusions.
Democrats running in 2022 just have to show visuals of Republican actions taken in 2020. The Proud Boy conflicts with the wingnuts in Congress trying to block certification will be there for everyone to see.
It won't matter that some spoke up when there was no other option.
You can also play McConnell refusing to consider aid for people in need because of a pandemic
Gohmert suggesting violence along with Chip Roy are also options.
Graham flip-flopping from calling Trump crazy, to singing Trump's praises, to what appears to be another reversal is another option.
It will not be not about how united the Republicans were, but the mess they left behind for Biden to clean up.
Also note that there will still trumpies out there to aid the Democratic picture of the GOP
CBS News: some in Trump cabinet considering 25th amendment
“This is not news we deliver lightly”—
CBS News reports Trump Cabinet members are discussing potentially invoking the 25th Amendment.@margbrennan says it’s not yet formally presented to Vice President Pence.
Maggie Haberman is on the White House situation too, of course
Confirming @maggieNYT - White House aides intervened for "the sake of the country" per one source re Trump rebuffing national guard via me & @KFauldershttps://t.co/2t28qvkOMB

The president, a senior adviser says, has "lost it." He has been almost impossible to talk to throughout the day today, and has been watching the coverage of the Capitol.
National security adviser Robert O'Brien, deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger and deputy chief of staff Chris Liddell are all considering resigning, sources tell me, @jaketapper and @vmsalama.
The White House social secretary Rickie Niceta has submitted her resignation tonight in reaction to today's protest, a source with direct knowledge tells @ABC
House Judiciary Dems try to nudge on the 25th amendment buzz:
In a statement, House Judiciary Committee Dems urge VP Pence and members from President Trump’s cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution and remove Trump from office.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the Cabinet should stop hiding behind anonymous leaks to reporters and do what the Constitution demands they do: invoke the 25th Amendment and remove this President from office. https://t.co/HUtUfeiTUP
Bill Barr quoted at 3:55 pm, don't know how much earlier he actually said it
From former Attorney General Bill Barr: “The violence at the Capitol Building is outrageous and despicable. Federal agencies should move immediately to disperse it.”
Haberman also seems to be trying to keep track of which pro-Trump Republicans are turning on him and which aren't after today's events, her retweets included:
Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers will reverse her position on challenging the election results.
"I have decided I will vote to uphold the Electoral College results and I encourage Donald Trump to condemn and put an end to this madness."
Sen. Lankford, who has previously joined objections to Biden's Electoral College win, now condemning violent rioters ... "We're headed towards the certification of Joe Biden to be the president of the United States"
Tom Cotton, whose op-ed in the Times calling for the insurrection act last summer during a wave of unrest over police killings of unarmed Black people, echoes his insurrection act call for the Capitol rioters and says 1/
"And the senators and representatives who fanned the flames by encouraging the president and leading their supporters to believe that their objections could reverse the election results should withdraw those objections." 3/3
I will no longer claim I am a Republican tonight as I am outraged and devastated by the actions of too many elected Republicans (some I know and served with) and supporters. Today a final line was crossed that I will not excuse. The GOP is NO more and left me and others behind. pic.twitter.com/Ertu4qYqyu
President Trump's former SecDef Jim Mattis rips into the President in a statement, saying, "Today’s violent assault on our Capitol, an effort to subjugate American democracy by mob rule, was fomented by Mr. Trump" pic.twitter.com/WCvxcPXpjp
This story generated more than 250k likes, shares and comments on Facebook and was widely cited, incuding ont he Hosue floor by Gaetz. It was flimsy from the start but now XRVision tells me the story is "outright false, misleading, and defamatory.”
WHO WAS THE FIRST TO STOP APPLAUDING..!! Name please....!
From the Gulag Archipelago:
... Here is one vignette from those years as it actually occurred.
A district Party conference was under way in Moscow Province.
It was presided over by a new secretary of the District Party
Committee, replacing one recently arrested. At the conclusion
of the conference, a tribute to Comrade Stalin was called for...
The small hall echoed with "stormy applause, rising to an ovation."
For three minutes, four minutes, five minutes, the "stormy applause rising to
an ovation," continued. But palms were getting
sore and raised arms were already aching. And the older people
were panting from exhaustion. It was becoming insufferably silly
even to those who adored Stalin. However, who would
dare be the first to stop?
The director of the local paper factory, an
independent and strong-minded man, stood with the presidium.
Aware of all the falsity and all the impossibility of the situation,
he still kept on applauding! Nine minutes! Ten! In anguish he
watched the secretary of the District Party Committee, but the
latter dared not stop. Insanity! to the last man! with make-
believe enthusiasm on their faces, looking at each other with
faint hope, the district leaders were just going to go on and on
applauding till they fell where they stood, till they were carried
out of the hall on stretchers! And even those who were left
would not falter.....Then, after eleven minutes, the director of
the paper factory assumed a businesslike expression and sat
down in his seat. and, oh, a miracle took place! Where had the
universal, uninhibited, indescribable enthusiasm gone? To a man
everyone else stopped dead and sat down. They had been saved!
The squirrel had been smart enough to jump off his revolving
wheel.
That, however, was how they discovered who the independent
people were. And that was how they went about eliminating
them. That same night the factory director was arrested. They
easily pasted ten years on him on the pretext of something quite
different.....
From what I heard on CNN a short while ago, Pence is clearly turning. He's turning because Trump basically turned on him, didn't have any interest in protecting him yesterday. That is big as regards the future after Jan. 20.
A sort of "Matt Gaetz base" is not enough to get anywhere about much of anything without born again conservative Christians."Deep State" wins, investigating the nuts. We'll have to deal with the nuts until some scandal or another doesn't get them re-elected. There's always some in any country, deal with it.
Officials confirms that Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao is leaving as a direct result of President Trump’s response to yesterday. https://t.co/RJxD2HPqB9
Biden live on TV right now. Talking about the assault yesterday. Says will not talk about 25th amendment, wants to talk only about the Capitol assault yesterday and the importance of our judicial branch. Trump's contempt of rule of law is at fault, also attacking the free press as the enemy of the people..attacking the intel services...chosing Putin instead of those who have sworn their allegiance to the United States...deployed army against the people to hold the people upside down...appointed Trump judges, "his judges" to confirm his re-election, and they wouldn't. The independent judiciary are responsible for our democracy surviving, we owe them gratitude...segue to "his DOJ" (announcement coming)...basically a dictator using a mob...during a pandemic
Incredibly skillful speech at this point! Actually awesome fitting so many things into a few minutes.
“Danforth calls his support of Hawley the ‘worst mistake’ of his life”: Columnist Tony Messenger has this essay online at The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. https://t.co/BCqtjsvyJF
Anderson Cooper, at the opening of his CNN show is doing a long sort of big picture op-ed on the political zeitgeist, made an excellent point differentiating Mitch Mc Connell from the johnny come lately vote switchers in the Senate: Mitt's speech in support of accepting all the state certificates came before there was any indication of the breach of the Capitol and that it was clearly heartfelt. Took a lot longer than Romney, though
NEW: Leading Republicans, including some who’ve stood by Trump, say: enough @GovChristie urges Republicans to “separate message from messenger” because: “I don’t think the messenger can recover from yesterday.”

The demonization of Democrats will happen independent of anything BLM or the Squad, which has grown by two members, does
Biden will issue his plan for police
Democrats will vote on his plan.
Graham will play to the Fox News crowd which operates independent of actual facts.
Biden is a socialist according to Fox
There is nothing that can be said that will change the minds of people who would vote for Graham
If BLM is silent, they are terrorists
If BLM protests police abuse, they are terrorists.
Republicans have made life easy for BLM
Remember Cory Booker is a radical who will bring those people to the suburbs.

I certainly agree that BLM and other radicals on the left have been attacking elected Democratic administrations since June.
Edit to add: oh and I can almost already hear the screeching about moderate AG Merrick Garland. Will they be protesting outside his house, I wonder?

Every Democrat up for or running for election in 2022 can start the speech with, "We are the only party that believes in democracy"
Next show videos of Proud Boys in D.C. supporting Republicans who are attempting a coup
Then show Republicans in Congress delaying certification of the Electoral College results.
Then ask the Republican opponent where they stand on sedition.
The above will pale in comparison to attempts to demonize BLM
Republicans believe that only they should be able to govern
Point to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin
Stacey Abrams for Governor 2022
BTW, Democrats argue about everything, it is called democracy.
