... Our strategists, says Mr. Bracken, are in a state of denial: "An older generation wants to make the nuclear nightmare go away by inoculating the young with protective ideas. Nuclear weapons are useless and we should get rid of them. Strengthen the [Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty]. Get rid of ballistic missiles. Deterrence will work."...These ideas, very much at the heart of the present administration's strategic thought, are fantasies,
New essay by Mead: America, Israel, Gaza, the World, Nov 18. Jeff Goldberg pointed to it with the title "Why Americans Support Israel," and I think Goldberg's title is more accurate, and I think Mead has got a lot of the answers to "why?" correct, as well as why you don't see the same kind of support elsewhere.
Thanks. I did enjoy the article. It did not surprise me that Mead describes the perspective as Jacksonian. It is very much in keeping with the old Scots motto, nemo me impune lacessit, or no one injures me with impunity which has been expressed in many different ways including the Gadsden flag. It is an interesting relic from a culture that very often finds itself on the losing side of historic conflicts. They can accept losing but not without a fight.
Thought you might be interested in a follow up to the article. Apparently Andrew Sullivan expressed his disagreement with it so Mead responded with Flogged By The Dish. I especially liked this part:
But it interests us that Mr. Sullivan, a man who normally (and correctly in our view) believes that humans should strive to understand and celebrate diversity and tolerate and embrace difference and non-conformity gets all bent out of shape when anybody tries to approach certain made-in-America subcultures and religions with the same tools he would automatically use to understand people in other parts of the world.
Wow, kinda depressing that Sullivan's reading concentration has fallen that low after years of short quippy blogosphere stuff? He used to be an editor! What's very clear to me is that Sullivan and Sclobete are excoriating Mead for a point of view that his essay does not take.
Throughout the discussion here of the latest conflict between Gaza and Israel the following video kept coming to mind. After reading your link, more so.
Excellent piece, needs to be planted in a lot more brains. That the caricatures are superb makes them rise to the level of that admittedly alluring song rather than being overwhelmed and undermined by it.
