Vladimir Putin has been intervening in the affairs of his neighbors for some time now, but Ukraine seems like a particularly egregious step due to how ugly the history there is:
Republican Rep. Scott Plakon, who is of Ukrainian descent, has filed a resolution calling for a day of remembrance in Florida for the Holodomor, the famine genocide inflicted by Soviet leaders in the 1930s, killing millions of Ukrainians.
Plakon introduced his Holodomor Remembrance Day resolution (HR 8055) on Tuesday, the day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would send troops into two Ukrainian provinces already largely controlled by Russian separatists, and two days before Putin launched Russia’s full assault against Ukraine.
Plakon’s resolution calls for Florida to recognize Nov. 26, 2022, as Holodomor Remembrance Day.
Holodomor (Ukrainian for murder by starvation) occurred in 1932 and 1933 in Ukraine, orchestrated by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. In part, Stalin sought to punish Ukrainians for bucking his government and its policies. He also wanted to forcibly break up Ukraine’s family farm culture to make way for Marxist collective farming. And he wanted to use Ukraine’s rich agricultural output to prop up Russia during what was then a severe Eastern European drought.
The Soviets forced Ukraine to export virtually all its agricultural output to Russia, and confiscated livestock, food, crops, even seeds. That led to mass famine in Ukraine.
If you read Putin's speech, you'll see that he sees just the opposite, that the west has been interfering with his neighbors for quite some time now (just like the Nazis did before WWII according to him, but this has been longer,) at least 30 years, and it's way past time to stop accepting that and fight back. Because the world needs their alternative.
This is actually a very astute protest poster. He's become far more delusional than Trump, has been surrounded by yes men far longer and has had total power. (A reminder that just before the invasion he had a Stalinist meeting where he humiliated his own intel chief and others in his cabinet, he allowed a video of that, no problem!)
The Ukrainian consul at the U.N. has said all the right things and taken the right attitude in UN meetings, he calls the Russian consul's statements crazy, ridicules them as nuts. Still China and India abstain, they see a useful crazy man. That's a very risky bet.
If the Russian people or a rebel group manages to off Putin, that would be the best outcome. The old Soviets are dying off and the rest of them can pick someone who still stokes Russian pride while not seeing the rest of the world as a Manichean "us vs. them" situation.
