Early 2020 pandemic combined with Geo. Floyd anti-police protests and associated violent unrest caused more sales of handguns than in history. People of all political persuasions were buying them for protection.
Criminals felt free to join in (especially very clear with looting). They found they could get away with it if they did it while police were busy. That phenomenon helped fuel creativity in the criminal mind (which we are seeing now).
In a small number of localities they actually tried defunding the police.
Covid in crowded jails caused the early release of many felons that might have still been in jail in other times. Covid also cause a lot of judges and prosecutors to go easy on bail and bond issues, which lefties has long been clamoring for, as in a pandemic they just couldn't cope with more people in jail.
People often get arrested for violence. (When let out, they go home and often get angry and cause domestic shootings.)
Likewise many mentally ill were let out on the streets.
That combined with the police being demonized in the news for an entire year, while they also had the covid beat under the threat of covid while most of the population was isolated in their homes (more domestic violence), while they had to be on the streets working, MADE POLICING A VERY UNDESIRABLE JOB.
Police presence deters crime. That's proven many times. (Yglesias posted a lot of the papers about a year ago.)
BLM of the Geo. Floyd era might have been the most counterproductive movement in history as to achieving goals.Exactly the wrong time.
May 2020 onward: A PERFECT STORM.
I don't know how it's going to be solved now as all those guns are out in the population at large for many years to come and policing is an unpopular job (a lot of the bad apples will stay tho!) There has to be culture change where people want licensing of guns and insurance for them and serious punishment for those who people who use them without one, just like with motor vehicles.
"Gun control" for new purchases going forward will not help much at all. The market is saturated! And people can sell what's out there and make ghost guns as well. (I admit I have not investigated whether regulation of parts certain used for ghost guns will deter growth of that market, I don't understand the details of whether that is possible.)
People can spit on a society until they stop having one:
Cops: 15-year-old girl reportedly laughed after killing jogger while trying to ‘bump’ him with car
September 17, 2021 at 5:58 pm PDT
By Crystal Bonvillian, Cox Media Group National Content Desk
MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. — A 15-year-old Washington state girl who allegedly killed an early-morning jogger while trying to “bump” him with a Toyota Camry has been charged with the man’s murder.
The SeaTac teen is charged with second-degree murder and felony hit-and-run in the July 18 death of Greg Moore, 53, of Maple Valley. Moore was found dead in a roadside ditch hours after he was struck.
The teen’s name is being withheld because she will be tried as a juvenile, a fact that angers Moore’s widow.
Yup see it everyday in the local news I am reading.
And people are going out and buying handguns like candy because they see or read those stories on local news and become more and more afraid.
I imagine how many victim families have done that, especially the ones where cops haven't found the attacker, and there are many of those.
The polls that say people want more police, including in "black communities" can't be denied. There is fear. They'd rather have police, but since they're not able to get enough in many places, a personal handgun will have to do. That their kid finds and shoots his little sister....
Partisan Dems yelling about old timey gun control of assault weapons aren't seeing the new picture. Aren't seeing the message of the election of people like Eric Adams.
They're reading the national news which isn't covering this stuff, think it has something to do with Congress. Must all live in peaceful neighborhoods with adequate policing.
I live in the Bronx. My section is still pretty much in control. But it could turn any day now...there's little indicators here and there, like "in yo face, coppers" drag racing happening all of a sudden
People won't take the subway anymore unless they absolutely have to. You're right, people don't know what they have until they lose it. I moved to NYC in the 80's, crack epidemic, wilding, Bernard Goetz. I was still young and agile and could handle it. And then I saw it miraculously change to like the lowest crime rate ever under Bloomberg. NYC refuses to go back, the rest of you can yell about how "it's the Republicans". My bet is is that if other blue cities don't start doing something about civil society soon, they'll be seeing a lot more "Republicans".
I would nitpick that in big cities, communication outside your hood is not even possible.
And um, how do you execute any fucking law you might make without enforcers? There has to be fear of consequences for breaking the laws that lawmakers make! (Even San Francisco D.A. Chesa Boudin seems to have been pushed to the breaking point of late.)
Right now it's like "yay, no more cops, lets beat up that old Asian guy and get his money!" or "yay, we can now get together a mob and rob Nordstrom's blind" or "yay, let's do that driveby and get that rapper that's been insulting us" "yay that bitch baby mama slept with another guy, I can off her." Etc.
When you see how life can be, you really become horrified at when it is off. This isn't a natural situation, for people to be this afraid and this incapable of dealing with one another.
I totally agree, is why I spend so much time looking at the crime news, to really figure out what is going on (our national media is serving us poorly right now on that front!) You have the recent experience as a security guard to boot. But I can't really get across how it is as New Yorker since at least the 80's (people who experienced the 70's knew even better! When NYC was the famous outlier, everywhere else was safer) Everyone like that in this city knows the miracle that happened and thanked our lucky stars every day, and could see the signs of it slipping away. Security is #1, it's why civilizations were built, that fear!

The facts
Biden backs funding more police to fight crime wave
Nashville, nationwide crime up: GOP blames Democrats, but it's more complicated than that
WASHINGTON — "SKYROCKETING MURDER RATES," claimed the National Fraternal Order of Police. "An explosion of violent crime," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "Democrat-run cities across the country who cut funding for police have seen increases in crime," tweeted U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.
On social media and in political speeches, some Republicans and pro-police groups say last year's calls to slash spending on law enforcement have led to a dramatic rise in killings in cities overseen by Democrats.
The increases they cite are real, and several big cities did make cuts to police spending. But the reductions were mostly modest, and the same big increases in homicides are being seen nationwide — even in cities that increased police spending. At the same time, the rates for burglaries, drug offenses and many other types of crime are down in many cities across the country.
I don't fear gangbangers and rappers targeting me.
Seeing out of control cops does concern me
Well thats fucking insane unless you're living off in a white rural district. There are a fuckton more black killings, often stray bullets even if you're not near the gangbanger/idiot rapper scene than there are cases of cop abuse, even though I've been quite supportive of cops improving their abuse rate. But you can only hold one fact in your head at a time. And don't try to spin the GOP defunding thing - you were all for these ridiculous brain fart refund statements, come up with psych therapy teams instead, elders on street corners instead. You made ridiculous claims that defunded police was working, when the facts clearly showed otherwise. Figures lie/liars figure redux.
Black killings tend to happen in specific areas of urban cities. You are unable to internalize that fact. Black gun purchases increased after Floyd because their was a sense that police were out of control. The gangbangers were already in place and no gun purchase surge.
The facts on funding/defunding effects are in dispute.
‘Re-Fund the Police’? Why It Might Not Reduce Crime.
Other anti-crime measures might be more effective, experts say, and avoid the downsides of policing.
Wow, you are a shitty motherfucker. A lot more kids, especially kids of color, getting hit by stray bullets than eaten by sharks. Go fuck off, you stupid nasty twit.
Michael Wolraich pays the bills in absentia and left him the keys for a couple years now. As well as discussing its maintenance with him in his last public comment here.
So an absurd comment - why do you use his website if you think that?
Not sure what "chickenshit" has to do with it - the callousness of comparing many deaths of kids through stray bullets this last year with a paucity of shark bites was just the last straw - just dismissing with ridicule & ridiculousness a real current concern even non-parents can feel - this is an endless stream of childish, misleading, distracting comments that keep us from having real adult discussions over the various issues. Using % rather than raw numbers to distract from the inconvenient fact that Dem vs GOP county population in California is something like 20:1 or 50:1 is another straw. I already debunked the claim that some city saw crime go down after defunding (cherry picked trough I think that caught a lull in early pandemic, but whatever, the numbers showed they went and re-hired a bunch of police staff or augmented with county officers to make up for gaps - contrary to the claims of savings - was another straw. They just keep piling up. Your nonsense at least tends to be on 1 thread so we can at least respond in one place. This race disinfo or cheerleading is splattered all over the site, and constantly distracts from the topic being discussed [e.g. a particular race issue related to crime in Milwaukee or a black journalist in Tokyo doesn't have to lead to another regurgitation of MLK & the Civil War as so often happens].
"Chickenshit"? I don't think that word means what you think it means, but whatevs...
Odd, I'd always heard chicken shit as "cowardly", but seems "worthless" is an accepted definition in some places.
So what did you or someone else debunk of my claims? I know, you think the Harvard / USC lawyer doing prior work for internationals disqualifies him de facto. But it really doesn't look good when an activist bribes judges and otherwise fakes evidence. As for the Maté stuff, "chicken scratch" comes to mind.
Black killings tend to happen in specific areas of urban cities. You are unable to internalize that fact.
Really, a basic factoid taken from Kansas City policing that i pulled straight out of Malcolm Gladwell 2 years ago, noting that crime hits parts of streets, not even whole streets, and upping policing on these critical street corners and hot spots makes much more difference than treating people (blacks especially of course) like criminals elsewhere has a much greater effect on bringing down crime rates, and blacks even understand the smashball focus on these evil crime-ridden locations - as long as they're not abused elsewhere.
Are you this fucking stupid, or are you fucking with me? And does it matter?
Did I mention I hate when people misuse statistics in obvious ways? Look at your wasted report
2018 income, taxes GOP counties (23) Dem counties (35)
Population (2020) 3,075,304. 36,573,634
Total tax returns 1,246,920 16,927,870
Total adj gross income $79bill $1542bill ($1.5trill)
What do all your % increases/decreases mean? Half the time when people focus on %, they're fucking with a huge magnitude difference in absolute numbers.
You posted the misleading stats - take responsibility for your dishonesty. i know you think we're just a bunch of dumb crackers who'll believe anything, but hey, seems there are limits.
A reminder that NYC enjoyed a truly phenomenal reduction in the crime rate for many years, it was proudly one of the safest cities in the country, and this included neighborhoods like Harlem, it was so safe that it was a pleasant and popular visit for tourists from allover the world.
President Clinton chose his post-presidency office to be located on the exact same street as this subway stop, it was very close by:
Guns, virtually all illegal, have flooded into a city that had mostly been rid of them! It will take time to reverse this, but soon-to-be Mayor Adams has famously made it a priority, as well as that of dangerous people (whether criminal or mentally ill) let out on the street. When tourism is one of your main businesses and the source of much tax income, not doing so will definitely make sure it will not revive.

Morgan Williams
On the research and very nuanced study of Morgan Williams, Jr. an economist at NYU's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. He researches the economics of crime and incarceration policy, with a particular focus on racial inequality. Raised in the South Bronx, Williams still lives and works not too far from where he grew up.
Whether you're an activist who's been shouting "defund the police" in the streets, or a conservative who flies a "thin blue line" flag in front of your house, if you're looking for someone to rile you up with a megaphone, Williams is not your guy. In these hyperpolarized times, Williams stands apart in speaking the technical language of a wonk with the cool emotions of a data-cruncher. "We want to be as a scientifically objective as possible," he says about his and his colleagues' work.....
The economists also find troubling evidence that suggests cities with the largest populations of Black people — like many of those in the South and Midwest — don't see the same policing benefits as the average cities in their study. Adding additional police officers in these cities doesn't seem to lower the homicide rate. Meanwhile, more police officers in these cities seems to result in even more arrests of Black people for low-level crimes. The authors believe it supports a narrative that "Black communities are simultaneously over and under-policed." The economists don't have a solid explanation for why bigger police forces appear to lead to worse outcomes in these cities, and they plan to investigate these findings more deeply in future research
Investment in the people in impoverished communities seems to be a more rational solution. We are not going to police our way out of the problem. Think education and jobs.
Again the cherry-picking that caused me to block - there's a comparison of 2 issues where 1 important one got conveniently left off:
...in the average city, larger police forces result in Black lives saved at about twice the rate of white lives saved (relative to their percentage of the population). When you consider African Americans are much more likely to live in dense, poverty-stricken areas with high homicide rates — leading to more opportunities for police officers to potentially prevent victimization — that may help explain this finding.
We should note, however, that one broad, average statistic on one measure of policing outcomes says nothing about other potential problems with policing... [longer discussion of deterrence, arrests & harassment - PP]
...
The economists also find troubling evidence that suggests cities with the largest populations of Black people — like many of those in the South and Midwest — don't see the same policing benefits as the average cities in their study. Adding additional police officers in these cities doesn't seem to lower the homicide rate.
Since the article cited doesn't elaborate on which of those Southern & Midwestern cities, it's nearly impossible to compare the conditions & how they actually affect crime rates, policing, homicides, low-level interactions. What makes an "average city" vs one with the "largest population of Black people", or is it coastal large cities vs inland ones - but instead of acknowledging the author's statement that we need to study this issue more to understand it - rmrd just draws his own conclusion, "education and jobs" - which could be right, but there's no logical backing for this, just more cant & incantations & wishlists & slogans while ignoring actual discussion of the problems of a huge increase in crime everywhere, and what has been *proven* to help, in *which circumstances*, et al. - i.e. one size doesn't fit all, as Malcolm Gladwell pointed out in the Kansas City experiment and suggested here as well - certain types of policing can fit a trouble spot bot not fit a calmer location, and vice-versa. Why can't we discuss issues like this without misleading blanket pretend panaceas? And if we're going to discuss "education and jobs", let's discuss - it's not like money hasn't been poured into initiatives - which ones actually worked, showed results? Which are still unclear/the jury's still out? etc. Adult analysis & discussion, an end to subtlety-free agendas.

^ I found that update on the Durham mall shooting interesting because people reacted in a stampede as if it was another mass shooting when in actuality it was just a dispute between two guys like in olden days. Shows you the fear out there! Malls were once mini town centers where like, seniors could go and do their exercise walk (or even have a big Christmas event, like say, A PARADE DOWN MAIN STREET, to mention another incident). We are experiencing a phenomenon where so many are afraid everything's a mass violence event involving basically a "terrorist". It really is a similar phenomenon to terrorism, where there is an attempt to make even the police "afraid". No rule of law, no civil society. So better have a handgun to protect you and yours. More mass quantities of guns out there.. A vicious circle.

Now this sounds to me like there's an awful lot of laws on the books regarding firearms and felons, including ghost guns, they just don't get prosecuted smartly often enough?
press release, Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of New York, Dec. 3
ALBANY, NEW YORK – Jonathan M. Cuney, age 38, and a part-time resident of East Greenbush, New York, was sentenced today to 87 months in prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, for unlawfully possessing firearms including “ghost guns,” and ammunition.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and John B. DeVito, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF).
Cuney previously pled guilty to unlawfully possessing, as a felon, a Springfield Armory rifle and an FMK Firearms Inc. AR-15-style rifle receiver/frame, and to possessing three unregistered silencers, between September 9, 2019 and November 14, 2019.
In pleading guilty on June 22, 2021, Cuney also admitted that from at least August 2018 until November 12, 2019, he purchased firearms parts from several dozen online retailers, and had these items shipped to [....]

The study, written by researchers at Tulane University, found that people who are pregnant or in the postpartum period are twice as likely to die by homicide than any other leading cause of maternal mortality. Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics from 2018 and 2019, the study’s authors determined that about two-thirds of the incidents occurred at home.
And although decades of research has shown that pregnant people face a heightened risk of violence, this study is the first to include death records from every state in the country [....]
and here's the results and conclusion of the Abstract from Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Nov. 2021
There were 3.62 homicides per 100,000 live births among females who were pregnant or within 1 year postpartum, 16% higher than homicide prevalence among nonpregnant and nonpostpartum females of reproductive age (3.12 deaths/100,000 population, P<.05). Homicide during pregnancy or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy exceeded all the leading causes of maternal mortality by more than twofold. Pregnancy was associated with a significantly elevated homicide risk in the Black population and among girls and younger women (age 10–24 years) across racial and ethnic subgroups.
CONCLUSION:
Homicide is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period in the United States. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of elevated risk for homicide among all females of reproductive age.

By ERIC ADAMS @ NEW YORK DAILY NEWS | NOV 28, 2021 AT 5:00 AM
The shooting of two police officers Wednesday night in the Bronx should serve as a harrowing reminder of just how much work we have to do to get guns off of our streets — and, also, how we need to do it.
The code was sent out to officers that night — a “1010,″ which means suspect with a gun — and a description. Vigilant New Yorkers had identified a dangerous individual in their neighborhood.
That is when Officers Alejandra Jacobs and Robert Holmes went to work, knowingly putting their lives on the line to address the threat to public safety. According to the NYPD, they approached 23-year-old Charlie Vasquez, who met the description from the 911 call. They asked him to show his hands and he opened fire. Heroically, although already shot in the arm, Jacobs returned fire while her partner disarmed him.
The threat was neutralized. One more gun off the street. One more blow against the bad guys.
Yet there are some in our city who would say these officers should never have confronted Vasquez, that he never should have been stopped and questioned.
During the debates for mayor, I was continually pressed on my position on the policing procedure known as “stop and frisk” — which is actually in law enforcement known as “stop, question and frisk” — and why I believed that, if used properly, it could reduce crime without infringing on personal liberties and human rights. Some of my opponents were particularly incredulous, declaring they would “end stop and frisk” forever.
In fact, as American courts have affirmed over many years, stop, question and frisk is a perfectly legal, appropriate and constitutional tool, when used smartly, as opposed to indiscriminately against hundreds of thousands of young Black and Brown men, as it was for years in New York City. Not only that, but it is a necessary tool, whereby police approach someone who fits a witness description or otherwise appears to be carrying an illegal weapon.
The question was never whether stop, question and frisk should be allowed; it was how it should be done. Those who claimed it should be outlawed entirely reduced a nuanced issue to an either-or argument, and unwisely answered it with a blanket ban.
The professional conduct of Jacobs and Holmes showed us all exactly why that would be a huge mistake. And it shows us clearly that, if we are going to rid our city of guns and dangerous individuals, we must stop fighting from the extremes about public safety and start talking about sensible solutions that work in the real world.
This is only one example. Right now — whether the fighting is about stop, question and frisk, defund the police or bail reform — we are having the wrong arguments.
The question should not be whether or not police are allowed to confront suspects; it should be about how we train them. The question should not be whether we have police; it should be how we use them. The question should not be whether judges should have the ability to protect New Yorkers from violent offenders; it should be how we let them.
As a former police officer who was deeply disturbed by the abuse of stop, question and frisk a decade ago, I testified in federal court to end the practice whereby young men of color were being harassed and targeted at alarming rates, and the judge in the case pointed to my testimony when she ruled to restrict the practice to a fairer approach. I also authored a law to delete the database of innocent people recorded from those unjust encounters.
At the same time, as a former officer and lifelong New Yorker, I also know personally how dangerous our streets can be — especially when criminals feel that they are in charge. And so I am also against defunding the police and a part of the bail reforms that prevented judges from exercising necessary discretion to keep violent individuals in jail who pose an imminent threat.
If we work to find common ground rather than fighting from entrenched, simplistic, ideological corners, we can have the safety we need and the justice we deserve. These two officers risked their lives to show us that last week. When I visited them at the hospital Thursday, it reminded me how important it is for our law enforcement and our communities to get this right. The least we can do is to learn from their dedication and example and start working together to protect New Yorkers’ rights to life and liberty at this critical moment for our city.
On Jan. 1, I will make that my number one priority as your next mayor. I pray all New Yorkers will join me.
Adams is the mayor-elect of New York City.

CHICAGO — The mother of a 12-year-old shot in the Loop over the weekend says her daughter did not get permission to go downtown — but is grateful her child is still alive.
At around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, Chicago police responded to the 0-100 block of North Michigan Avenue on the report of a shooting. After an investigation, police believe an unknown suspect fired a shot into a group of people.
12-year-old Jayda Jones, who was in the group, was shot in the back and transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in serious condition.Just hours later, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the 200 block of South Wabash.
Jayda’s mother, Ruthie Jones, says video captured the moment her daughter was shot Saturday night, a terrifying moment she didn’t even know happened until Monday morning.
“I had no knowledge of my child being down there. She’s 12, she would not have been at Millennium Park by herself. They barely go anywhere without me,” Ruthie Jones told WGN.
Ruthie Jones said her daughter did not have permission to go downtown, instead she was supposed to be sleeping over at her half-sister’s home in Calumet City. She said Jayda returned home Sunday night, but Ruthie Jones noticed something wasn’t right.
“She came home in pain. I said what’s wrong? She said, ‘I was at the park with my sister and I fell and hit my back, and I think I probably fractured something.’ I said, OK. I gave her a pain pill,” Ruthie Jones told WGN.
Still not realizing her daughter had been shot, Ruthie Jones took Jayda to the emergency room, however they were turned away because there were no beds available. The next day they went to another hospital.
“When the x-ray came back, we saw a bullet by her spine. It was still in her. So I said, I’m not going to be mad at you, where were you at and what happened to you. And she said Millennium Park,” Ruthie Jones said.
The x-ray shows how close the bullet came to Jayda’s spine. It ruptured her kidney and went through her spleen. She is currently in fair condition.
While Jayda is recovering, police are still investigating what took place downtown Saturday night.
Ruthie says gun violence is a problem for Chicago and has had a gun pulled out on her and her daughter before, which prompted them to leave Englewood.
“I moved to the suburbs because of everything happening in Chicago. But overall, running is not going to solve the problem. We have to be the change that we want to see in this world,” Ruthie Jones told WGN.
Ruthie Jones says Jayda is dealing with some internal bleeding, but is praying for the best.
No arrests have been made in the shootings.
WTF did the E.R. the night of the shooting do? Something's not right with this story!
A carjacking of an 80-year-old woman led to a pursuit from Jackson into Clinton and Byram on Thursday, the Darkhorse Press reports.
Thursday night, David Tyler was accused of carjacking an elderly woman in Clinton. According to the report, Tyler instructed his 15-year-old nephew to assist in the crime.
After the vehicle was located, a chase ensued with Tyler’s two nephews onboard. Reports state that Tyler fired a weapon at the pursuing officers. Units with Clinton, Jackson, Terry and Byram police departments were involved in the chase. Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers also aided in the pursuit.
Police used a spike strip to finally bring Tyler to a stop in the 3400 block of Tank Road where he was taken into custody. A 9mm handgun was said to have also been found in his possession.
Pending charges against Tyler include the kidnapping of his two nephews, felony fleeing, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felon in possession of a firearm.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have also been brought in on this case. Federal charges are expected to be pursued. There is no information if the 15-year-old will face any criminal charges for assisting Tyler in the carjacking.
Tyler will remain in federal custody.
After the incident, the City of Clinton held a press conference regarding the crime. Darkhorse Press was at the conference which can be viewed below [....]
The pace of the increase in violence in many cities has slowed down in 2021, the problem is, the increase was so high in 2020, that if 2020 becomes the new normal, that's wiping away decades (in some cities) of violence reduction. https://t.co/LAo04CdiM5

Oprah feels shock, REALLY, where is her voice about the BLACK CHILDREN getting killed, I do NOT hear a dam thing from her. Guess only the rich lives count to her! https://t.co/y3sVtYv3wR
Violent crime in #LosAngeles, however, has notably increased. Homicides are up 46.7% compared with 2019, while shooting victims are up 51.4%, according to police data. https://t.co/h5U9EBz8bo
Arrested for the murder of Jacqueline Avant, the wife of "the black godfather" of black music, is a black 29-year old felon, Aariel Maynor, with a long rap sheet, who was ON PAROLE. While on parole he was armed, trying to rob houses in Beverly Hills (found on surveillance video at another house), and shot himself in the foot WITH HIS AR-15! He, along with his AR-15 and gang tattoos (or whatever they are) were found at his own house, where he sat with his self-infllicted gunshot wound. WHAT KIND OF PAROLE BOARD & PAROLE OFFICERS DO THEY HAVE THERE? Ones that believe bullshit? They should be indicted for something too.
I just spoke to several students and a teacher from Haines Elementary School, which went on lockdown early this afternoon after a 71-year-old man was shot and killed outside. They say they heard gunshots and felt panicked, not knowing where the shots came from @cbschicagopic.twitter.com/QNHlZxYHAl

I listened to a video report from the evening. The police are telling reporters it's looking like a totally random shooting for no particular reason. Except that the shooter actually stepped out of his stopped car to continue the shooting, so it really was execution style.

re: how did this happen?

My bet is is that if other blue cities don't start doing something about civil society soon, they'll be seeing a lot more "Republicans".
by artappraiser on Mon, 12/06/2021 - 12:11am

Orion is afraid because homicides are increasing. You are afraid because homicides are increasing
Yet, you say your area appears to be under control.
You want more police.
I don't fear gangbangers and rappers targeting me.
Seeing out of control cops does concern me
I fear for my younger relatives. Given where they live, George Zimmerman is a bigger threat than a rapper.
I look at the data on increasing police presence and see no clear cut data that increased police equals decreased homicides, I see a scatter gram.
I see a Minneapolis police department that still has out of control cops.
I see a trial in Minneapolis where a man died because a trading officer couldn't tell the difference between her Taser and a gun.
I don't see police as a solution to the surge in crime
I see incompetent cops who will lie on the stand.
I propose implementing programs that keep young residents off the streets and away from the danger they face by interacting with the police.
People with better education and access to jobs are less likely to commit crime.

Figures lie/liars figure redux.
by PeraclesPlease on Wed, 12/08/2021 - 11:48am
Black killings tend to happen in specific areas of urban cities. You are unable to internalize that fact. Black gun purchases increased after Floyd because their was a sense that police were out of control. The gangbangers were already in place and no gun purchase surge.
The facts on funding/defunding effects are in dispute.

So an absurd comment - why do you use his website if you think that?
by artappraiser on Thu, 12/09/2021 - 2:02am
I don't think that word means what you think it means, but whatevs...

by A Guy Called LULU on Thu, 12/09/2021 - 11:44am
Odd, I'd always heard chicken shit as "cowardly", but seems "worthless" is an accepted definition in some places.
So what did you or someone else debunk of my claims? I know, you think the Harvard / USC lawyer doing prior work for internationals disqualifies him de facto. But it really doesn't look good when an activist bribes judges and otherwise fakes evidence. As for the Maté stuff, "chicken scratch" comes to mind.
by PeraclesPlease on Thu, 12/09/2021 - 3:26pm
Really, a basic factoid taken from Kansas City policing that i pulled straight out of Malcolm Gladwell 2 years ago, noting that crime hits parts of streets, not even whole streets, and upping policing on these critical street corners and hot spots makes much more difference than treating people (blacks especially of course) like criminals elsewhere has a much greater effect on bringing down crime rates, and blacks even understand the smashball focus on these evil crime-ridden locations - as long as they're not abused elsewhere.
Are you this fucking stupid, or are you fucking with me? And does it matter?
by PeraclesPlease on Wed, 12/08/2021 - 1:08pm
Did I mention I hate when people misuse statistics in obvious ways? Look at your wasted report
2018 income, taxes GOP counties (23) Dem counties (35)
Population (2020) 3,075,304. 36,573,634
Total tax returns 1,246,920 16,927,870
Total adj gross income $79bill $1542bill ($1.5trill)
What do all your % increases/decreases mean? Half the time when people focus on %, they're fucking with a huge magnitude difference in absolute numbers.

Investment in the people in impoverished communities seems to be a more rational solution. We are not going to police our way out of the problem. Think education and jobs.

Again the cherry-picking that caused me to block - there's a comparison of 2 issues where 1 important one got conveniently left off:

New Yorkers know, you can't spin them, we know whether we live in a low crime city or not, we've had both.

Link has lots of good photos.
Edit to add: A reminder that the misnamed "Black Lives Matter" believes in abolishing not just police, but courts and prisons.

Well, American Taliban hasn't helped
(tho at least in this photo they're not pointing guns at sibling's' heads a la "Focus on the Family")
Ammonites or ammosexuals, quite the exhibitionists. Faux rebels without a cause - I'm sure it's God's will whatever happens.

I listened to a video report from the evening. The police are telling reporters it's looking like a totally random shooting for no particular reason. Except that the shooter actually stepped out of his stopped car to continue the shooting, so it really was execution style.
