Uh, Republicans were the enemy here - they labeled the Republican reformer a "Democrat" to get him defeated.
I mean, "entrenched Republican elite representatives" vs run-of-the-mill Republican membership, but that membership voted for those leaders. Or the largely Republican-controlled media?
