The U.S. Supreme Court has shut its doors to partisan gerrymandering—a major blow to democracy & a ruling that will haunt this Court. What this means, how things will get worse, how they can get better… Let’s map it all out. #fairmaps#SCOTUSpic.twitter.com/hV9W87ZriG
Justice Roberts: "The Framers also gave Congress the power to do something about partisan gerrymandering in the Elections Clause. That avenue for reform established by the Framers, and used by Congress in the past, remains open." #SCOTUS abdicated. Pass #HR1#ForThePeople.
Today the Supreme Court threw up its hands & declared it can’t rein in partisan gerrymandering – can’t protect Americans’ constitutional rights to participate in their democracy equally & choose their representatives. It's a shameful blow to the functioning of our democracy.
One thing I'm *pretty* sure people get wrong* is that Democrats disadvantage in districting/gerrymandering does not come from cities being denser than rural areas per se. 1/3
* I've thought about this a lot but am still not 100% sure my intuition is right.
Rather, it's that the bluest contiguous areas (which happen to be urban and dense) are bluer than the reddest contiguous areas (which happen to be rural) are red. 2/3
In a hypothetical world where certain rural areas were *extremely red* (e.g. 80%+ GOP voting), as red as some urban cores are blue (e.g. 80%+ DEM voting), the GOP would have more problems with districting and could more easily be gerrymandered. 3/3
All this shows is that Silver hasn't been following this story. I've read countless articles discussing the divide between low density red rural areas and high density blue urban areas. A "natural" divide exists that gerrymandering takes advantage of.
With partisan gerrymandering decision (plus Citizens United/Shelby) Roberts Court has entered a new political Lochner era. This decision tears at the fabric of our democracy and puts the interests of the established few above the many. History will not be kind in its assessment.
In the Census case there is NO way any neutral court could uphold the effort to include the citizenship question. The record/new documents conclusively demonstrate that the Administration was lying about its intentions. This cannot be ignored and the question cannot be allowed.
Let me be very clear. In spite of the troubling Supreme Court gerrymandering ruling we continue to fight. We still have both more tools and the strong will to bring fairness to our democracy. We need concerned citizens to join us. Nothing worth having comes easy. We can do this
Hey Scott - how can you possibly justify the gerrymandering you supervised in Wisconsin? Democrats got way more votes and far fewer seats. Anti-democratic. Can you win a fair election? And putting up a picture of two black guys is an example of the worst of us. And you. https://t.co/7vCnXVORKb
Holder brings up the citizenship question because they also ruled on that, against the administration "for now":
The #SupremeCourt has ruled that the Trump administration cannot include a citizenship question on #Census2020 -- for now. In this episode of #Legalese, Professor Joshua Geltzer (@jgeltzer) predicts this decision will be the "last major word" on a critical issue. pic.twitter.com/ImgyAxGbjy
Don's having trouble with this Constutution and Democracy thing right now - which could be his most impeachable offense to date, since his job doesn't exactly give him the right to blow up the Constitution when he's unhappy with it - quite the opposite - his main job description is supporting the Constitution. The big dumb thieving hairball.
Obama on gerrymandering, promoting that which was indicated by the ruling, make new law:
The most important job in our democracy is citizen. If you’re tired of politicians manipulating maps and ignoring the will of voters, I hope you’ll sign @allontheline’s Citizen Commitment today: https://t.co/CUAaoAGY6z

Waiting to see how Eric Holder and other gerrymandering opponents respond to this.
