BREAKING: White House secretly visited former FAA site in Calif. in escalating search for place to relocate homeless people. If they follow through, Trump administration would assume controversial task of moving homeless. @JStein_WaPo@Jdawsey1@TracyJanhttps://t.co/9jsvGnHeW6
Californian lawmakers approved legalisation Wednesday that caps rent increases at 5% after inflation and expands protections to some 8 million tenants, according to the bill's author, Assembly member David Chiu (D-San Francisco).
Why it matters: Per the New York Times, this is the biggest step yet in a surge of initiatives to address a nationwide affordable-housing crunch. California in particular has been struggling with chronic housing and homeless crises, AP notes.
The rent bill won the support of the California Business Roundtable, representing leading employers, and was unopposed by the state’s biggest landlords’ group — an indication of how dire housing problems have become, the NYT notes.
Agreed, but if you read the NYT article, you see there's some understanding and nuance about that in this situation, they are just at wit's end about what to do as regards the gentrifying nabes, it's like emergency stopgap. Kind of interesting...this is not exactly your grandpa's rent control. What they do next is key. And admittedly. maybe they'll do nothing and it will be just like grandpa's rent control...
Admit I didnt take on the firewall, and understand the gentrifieds creat their own obstacles - we were discussing this re Bay Area not long ago, in terms of open space vs needed new dwellings.
