Iranian official: No survivors on an Ukrainian jetliner that crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran's main airport with at least 170 people on board. https://t.co/app9NMTST0
A Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 176 people crashed outside Tehran shortly after takeoff. at 7,952 ft. ... Iran's official state news agency said the plane crashed because of an engine fire caused by a technical fault. It didn't explain how that conclusion was reached.26 mins ago
NEW: “We have intelligence from multiple sources including our allies and our own intelligence. The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. This may well have been unintentional”
—Canadian PM Trudeau in press conference just now
Trudeau: Canadians want answers, I want answers. That means closure, transparency accountability, and justice. And this government will not rest until we get that.
President Trump was asked about the crash and said: “Somebody could have made a mistake on the other side. ... Not our system. No. It has nothing to do with us.”
After MH17, the Dutch Safety Board made recommendations, including to @ICAO, on show to stop such a shoot-down from happening again. https://t.co/JXYSHIPA8Q
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian state TV, citing a military statement, says the country ‘unintentionally’ shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 aboard.
The statement came Saturday morning and blamed “human error” for the shootdown.
Unprecedented - Iran apologises for shooting down Ukrainian plane - According to Army statement, the plane was shot down "unintentionally due to human error" https://t.co/eRMxiCYPK4
#Iran's Armed Forces statement: While the plane was turning around, it went toward a sensitive military center of #IRGC and it was at an altitude & in the shape of a hostile aircraft, in which the aircraft was inadvertently hit base on human error.#IranPlaneCrash#UkrainianPlane
This is not orchestrated by #Iran's regime. These are #Iranians chanting "Death to Liars" who attempted to cover up #ukraineplanecrash. These are accumulative protests of people who are fed up.
yes. I get the impression it is like an extension of the anger about "the mullahs" in general, there is a seizing on anything they can find. After all, they shot to kill protestors in Dec.
p.s. It is the Zarif wing, I am sure. Just from seeing his twitter feed. (I honestly don't know if the man is sincere or is a cynical political operative. I think: does it really matter? As he is consistent with that persona.) He's obviously trying to get across to the mullahs that they must come out with humble humane messages at this time, (bonus win with that: the opposite of saber rattling is also the opposite of Trump) that that's the way to win both global support and calm the protests. They endanger their very existence by doing otherwise. But protestors are not in a mood to accept appeasement, the deaths and arrests have been very brutal.
Wow: Iranian students in front of Amir Kabir University in Tehran protest regime downing of passenger plane full of students. "Resignation is not enough. Prosecution is necessary," they chant https://t.co/xBG3cQINPe

IRGC Aerospace Command takes full responsibility in press conference, absolves others, see entire thread here of translations:
IRGC Aerospace Cmdr.: The officials, including Aviation authorities, who kept denying the missile hit, are not guilty. They made those remarks based on what they knew. We are to blame for everything.
This is an amazing image, protestors not walking on Israeli (!) and American flags. This reminds me of the Hong Kong protestors, there is a sharing of some ideology, freedom of speech seems to be the thing that they are admiring?

And here's an interesting agitprop thing I ran across:
Iranians brilliantly taking regime propaganda incl religious symbols & flipping against em

Photo 2- Suleimani going to hell and welcomed by arch vilain Yazid
The clue is: flipping the color from green to red pic.twitter.com/k1pjk9ISH4

I think they pulled down that initial snap judgment, now waiting for a real investigation. Assume something looked awry on slightly closer glance.
Black box not going to Boeing either - guess after the 7373 Max crashes, they're about as trusted as Volkswagen on emissions.

WaPo 1 hr. ago: Ukraine bans flights from Iranian airspace after passenger plane crashes, killing 176
At least one expert said it appeared the plane, which had departed from an airport south of Tehran, was “not intact” before it hit the ground.
