Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose 5% this year for family coverage nationwide, hitting an average of $20,576 in 2019, according to new research from the Kaiser Family Foundation. And workers are paying $6,015 toward those premiums, the group reported Wednesday. [...]
About 153 million Americans get their health insurance through their jobs and since 2009, average family premiums have increased 54% while the amount workers contribute to them have risen 71%, according to the group. That compares with a 26% increase in wages and inflation of 20% during that time. “The single biggest issue in health care for most Americans is that their health costs are growing much faster than their wages are,” said Kaiser CEO Drew Altman.
“Costs are prohibitive when workers making $25,000 a year have to shell out $7,000 a year just for their share of family premiums.”
