In particular, the focus on rigor here is something I want to find the right forum to talk about. I've spent a lot of time in rooms where well-meaning white folks talked about lowering the rigor of the academic experience of students and it's just depressing.
From pedagogy to assessments, there is a lot of folks out there invested in the idea that certain people just can't learn the things all the other kids can.
It ain't woke if they can't read is what I always tell my people.
I also will note: I fundamentally believe that good data, assessment, and a push for academic rigor is not only necessary, it is the just way to educate all children and it will do the most for students who have had opportunities denied to them.
Charters are allowed to have admission preferences so it’s not an apple to apple composition with traditional public schools. They also historically enroll less special education students. It’s great that this school can be successful for a very specific type of student.
That completely depends on the state - that's where the regulatory power is in. Also, the reality is given the wider context of school-age population decrease in urban centers, the goal is enrollment for financial reasons and so there's been a broadening of charter enrolles
