What theories in social science might explain the rise of “a-hole politics”? Today, it’s top of mind as someone who’s followed me for a while was, unprompted, a jerk. A taste for social dominance might explain some behavior but I’m curious how others make sense of the dynamic?
.@KeithNHumphreys highlights “lack of interpersonal consequences” on social media along with group dynamics that reward raging against perceived out-groups. https://t.co/ViNplOIMH2
.@GaribaldoValdez offers a couple good recommendations and links the trend to Eduardo Bonilla-Silva’s “notion of racialized emotions.” https://t.co/ujCQ9ClmQe
For more on @Davin_Phoenix’s work, see this thread that highlights The Anger Gap’s win of the 2020 Ralph J. Bunche Award for its research that “shows how anger mobilizes Black and white Americans differentially to exacerbate political inequality.” https://t.co/O6L8qyEwzk
.@AlbertsonB2 recommends @ErinCassese’s work on dehumanization that studies how “voters dehumanize opposition candidates and party members in both subtle and blatant ways.” https://t.co/1KssUJTCje
.@BryceABagley recommends Yuval Harari’s work that finds “Modern propaganda relies on producing new myths of subcultural identity defined by disintegration, ‘othering,’ and hatred towards others in the same society.” https://t.co/48Wjv5wyhb
