With 429 votes recorded, Pelosi needed 215 to be elected Speaker. AOC, Cori Bush, and Barbara Lee put her over the top casting the final votes after initially abstaining. Had they ultimately abstained or voted “present,” they would have forced a second ballot.

I think the intrigue is overhyped. Pelosi gives AOC space, AOC provides new blood. Occasionally the "gotta have the votes" reminder comes in, but mostly it's just a healthy part of the coalition, keeps things from being as dull as dishwater, does promote new ideas that will eventually catch on.
