    Thanks for this, Wolfie

Good wrap. I'm somewhat heartened by the speed and scope of the international relief effort. But it's a race against time for many of the injured, who risk dying for lack of the most basic treatment. Clean water is in short supply, and food for  the homeless soon will be. Unburied corpses pose a serious health risk.

Many countries and NGOs have sent planeloads of tents, body bags and essential medical supplies, but I understand only one runway is operational in Port-au-Prince and flights are being stacked up or diverted. The port itself is unusable, and some roads to other parts of the country are impassable. It's an ungodly mess.

Hundreds of millions in aid have been pledged. That's much needed, since the entire country's already woeful infrastructure has been wiped out, but the next 24-48 hours are crucial in preventing thousands more from dying needlessly.

The news are devastating. I know the feeling of the family's victims since I experienced myself how hard to lose relatives and friends from Yogya's earthquake several years ago.
