I think they pulled down that initial snap judgment, now waiting for a real investigation. Assume something looked awry on slightly closer glance.
Black box not going to Boeing either - guess after the 7373 Max crashes, they're about as trusted as Volkswagen on emissions.

WaPo 1 hr. ago: Ukraine bans flights from Iranian airspace after passenger plane crashes, killing 176
At least one expert said it appeared the plane, which had departed from an airport south of Tehran, was “not intact” before it hit the ground.

WaPo: U.S. now believes Ukrainian airliner was brought down by Iran
President Trump was asked about the crash and said: “Somebody could have made a mistake on the other side. ... Not our system. No. It has nothing to do with us.”

Strangely this is prolly the most quickly truthful they've been.

yes. I get the impression it is like an extension of the anger about "the mullahs" in general, there is a seizing on anything they can find. After all, they shot to kill protestors in Dec.

p.s. It is the Zarif wing, I am sure. Just from seeing his twitter feed. (I honestly don't know if the man is sincere or is a cynical political operative. I think: does it really matter? As he is consistent with that persona.) He's obviously trying to get across to the mullahs that they must come out with humble humane messages at this time, (bonus win with that: the opposite of saber rattling is also the opposite of Trump) that that's the way to win both global support and calm the protests. They endanger their very existence by doing otherwise. But protestors are not in a mood to accept appeasement, the deaths and arrests have been very brutal.

This is an amazing image, protestors not walking on Israeli (!) and American flags. This reminds me of the Hong Kong protestors, there is a sharing of some ideology, freedom of speech seems to be the thing that they are admiring?
And here's an interesting agitprop thing I ran across:

Looking like they weren't exactly planning on admitting shooting it down:
