We must not allow the truth to - once again - become the victim of war.”

Earlier today, before the attack on Babyn Yar this afternoon, the leadership of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, issued a strong condemnation of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s use of language related to the Holocaust, and loudly condemned the country’s aggression against Ukraine, pledging to document and submit war crimes committed by Russian forces to the International Court of Justice in the Hague.

The statement was signed by Maksym Rabinovich, CEO, Ilya Khrzhanovsky, Artistic Director, Ruslan Kavatsiuk, Deputy CEO, and Oleksiy Makukhin, Executive Director, of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. They noted, “As experts who work with Holocaust research and commemoration, we are deeply outraged that the aggressor country has used genocidal rhetoric to justify its shameful actions. Russia has vulgarly instrumentalized anti-Nazi rhetoric and is trying to take on the role of a fighter against Nazism.”

The statement continued, “We remind the Russian leadership that Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities were last subjected to massive bombing by Nazi Germany during World War II, now they are burning under the blows of Putin's army, under the false and outrageous narrative of "denazifying" Ukraine and its people.”

The signatories went on to pledge, “As experts in research on crimes against humanity, we will thoroughly collect and record evidence of crimes against humanity committed by the Russian aggressors. We will create a database for the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague. Our Academic Council has already addressed a letter to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. Only a principled position and joint action can defeat evil.”

In an open letter sent today to Mr. Karim A. A. Khan QC, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, by BYHMC academic council, headed by lifelong genocide researcher, Father Patrick Desbios, they noted: "President Putin accused Ukraine of committing genocide against the Donbass inhabitants. As an expert in both the field and region, I want to certify that after close examination of the facts and reports, there has not been a single trace of the crimes qualified as genocide since 2014.

Sumy: more than 500 international students trapped in Ukrainian town battered by shelling

More than 500 international students are trapped in Sumy, a town 40km from Ukraine’s northeast border that has been battered by days of shelling by Russian forces.

Most of the students are Nigerian, while others are from Ghana, Ethiopia, Angola, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ireland, India, Lebanon and Turkey. They have all suddenly found themselves stranded in a war zone.

Trains and buses have stopped running; roads and bridges out of the city have been destroyed and fighting has been reported in the city’s streets.

The students have remained in five hostel buildings since the Russian invasion began last week, after advice from their university to stay behind – even as many Ukrainian students fled.

Oluwaseun Adefemi, a Nigerian medical student who arrived in Sumy in January, said that food and water supplies were already running low and it was no longer safe to head to local stores.

“We are hearing blasts every day. We have to run into our bunkers each time. Yesterday we heard the blasts at six or seven in the morning. When we hear them, we run to the basement – that’s our makeshift bunker,” he said, speaking by telephone late on Wednesday.

“We are running out of food, we’re running out of water. What we have now is mainly soda water,” Adefemi said.

While the conflict has so far mainly focused on the outskirts of the city, fears are rising that troops may soon enter the city.

Adefami said that many of the students felt let down by the university. “We expected that the school would give us the best information [....]

A video received by The New York Times gives a glimpse inside the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine as Russian forces attacked it on Friday. In the video, a warning is issued in Russian over the facility’s loudspeakers, apparently directed at the soldiers outside.

“Stop firing at the nuclear facility,” a voice says. “Immediately stop firing. You are endangering the safety of the entire world. The operation of a crucial part of Zaporizhzhia’s plant could be damaged. We will not be able to restore it.”

In earlier videos, military vehicles and personnel could be seen firing missiles at buildings inside the nuclear complex; at least one building was set ablaze. There has been no sign of an increase in radiation levels, though a reactor sustained some damage. Russian forces now control the plant.

The video of the warnings was sent to The Times by a source with ties to the local government. It appears to have been filmed inside the nuclear complex and matches archival videos and photographs of the plant reviewed by The Times’s Visual Investigations team.

A clock seen on the wall bears the approximate time of the attack on Friday. A sign reads “35 years; Block 3” — an apparent reference to the start of operations in the block. Construction of the plant began in 1979, and by 1987, four power units were in operation, according to the website for Energoatom, a state-run enterprise that operates all nuclear plants in Ukraine.

KYIV, Ukraine — With hands still dirty from the battlefield, a dozen Russian prisoners of war were presented to journalists at a hastily called news conference in Kyiv on Saturday, intended to support Ukraine’s claim of capturing significant numbers of Russian soldiers.

The prisoners sat, stony-faced, at a table in a conference room of a Ukrainian news agency while heavily armed and masked Ukrainian security service officials looked on.

Each read out a statement from a handwritten text on a piece of paper and later answered questions. They blended details of chaotic early firefights in the conflict that led to their capture, which sounded genuine, with woodenly phrased condemnations of their own country’s leadership for starting the war.

All said they had not been mistreated.

Their comments, and the fact of their captures, supported accounts by Western military analysts and governments that the Russian offensive had suffered setbacks early in the war, though the Russian army’s superior numbers and equipment could well reverse that trend.

“The whole column burned,” said one soldier, who identified himself as Lt. Dmitry Kovalensky, with a Russian tank unit. He said they were attacked with what he believed was a mix of projectiles from a drone and shoulder-fired anti-tank missiles near Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine. He said he ran into a forest and later surrendered to Ukrainian forces.

The men looked exhausted but showed no outward signs of mistreatment.

All the prisoners of war described being captured after their armored columns were ambushed on roads, accounts that supported Ukraine’s assertions that its military has made good use of Western-supplied antitank weaponry, such as the American-made Javelin missile. But independent analysts have also described less dramatic problems for the Russian army, including logistical snarls that forced soldiers to abandon vehicles that ran out of fuel.

The prisoners said they did not know what would happen to them after the news conference. While they said they were treated well, it was unclear whether they had showered or been offered clean clothes.

Russia has been trying to recruit Syrians to fight in Ukraine to bolster Moscow’s flagging invasion, according to the Pentagon.

A senior US defence official said it was unclear how many Syrians Vladimir Putin is seeking to recruit, but said “we find it noteworthy that he believes he needs to rely on foreign fighters”. The official added there was no evidence of Syrian fighters having arrived in Ukraine so far.

The Russian recruitment effort was first reported by a Syrian news website, DeirEzzor24, which said Moscow was seeking volunteers to act as guards on six-month contracts, for between $200 and $300 a month. On Russian strike damaging hospital in Mariupol, Maksym Dotsenko, chief of the Ukrainian Red Cross told me it could cause “complete collapse” of children’s medicine in the city. He said his teams had tried for 4 days in a row to evacuate civilians from the city to no avail 1.

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
