A note that I find this a little too focused on AR-15 mass shootings for my taste, when in reality following the news, I find that a couple guys or even a single guy with a handgun can and often enough do shoot like 4 to a dozen people in a home or in a crowd. Yeah, getting rid of the big weapons would help a little, but not a lot of what's been going on. It's foolhardy to think that will solve most of the gun violence problem.

I read parts. The mental illness angle struck me more than the age angle. We have a ton of mentally ill people in prisons, and we also have them wandering the streets homeless once they are let out if they are. And we have tough laws in most places making it hard to to claim mental illness as a defense. We just shove it all under the rug. When they are as severe as his case, where he is like a different person with medication and therapy, there's got to be better solutions. In many states we spend a lot on imprisoning them, at the very least it would cost the same having them in a different kind of institution. I'm not a criminologist, maybe it helps to have a mixed population, I don't know. Just seems so often that we could have better outcomes for the same cost.
That said, he had the kind of illness where he was able to hide it from help, from earlier intervention; have to admit I am not sure anything could be done. Not even keeping him away from weapons, he'd have gotten them somehow, he was driven...

reporting that people were having "a joyous time" before the car came strikes me as kind of odd if the protest was supposed to be about the fatal police shooting of a black man. I question whether much of the crowd was protesting late on Sunday night, especially if they were being "joyous". It matters as to motive of the homicidal driver, it implies he was intentionally attacking protesters.

two separate incidents southern Maryland, victims 21 and 19 year old males, the 19 year old was shot in the head and died, the 21 year old is in a trauma center

There were many shootings elsewhere on Juneteenth but it is interesting that the one that went really went "viral" on twitter, with lots of participation in commentary by "black twitter" was the shooting at Lake Merritt in Oakland area. I presume that this was both because it happened with a crowd of about 1,000 surrounding and caused a stampede situation, and (I admit I intuit this from a lot of commentary) that it is long a traditional place to celebrate the date that many people know about.
A lot of the reaction is not logical of course but a lot of shootings we are having are not a logical phenomenon. Made me realize that it is common for people of all subcultures to dismiss the incidence of shootings at night clubs and bars and such as expected activity where people are "sinning" already, and that includes "bad" neighborhoods, that they all sort of deserve it in some way, but when it is in a public place in the daytime where "good" people are gathered, it has much more shock effect.
There was a lot of interesting reaction, could result in some change in the types of activism we see. Especially in that the perps were young men. I will just grab a couple tweets off the top to give an idea, go to the link for more.

these stories are part of one major related phenomenon that has to be dealt with, mho:
whether one blames "rap culture" or not. Yes, young black men are profiled by police. It's easy to label that racism-as all profiling by physical characteristics is unfair. But It's not totally irrational to do this on their part, it doesn't come out of thin air.

Last night there was an execution in Humboldt Park (Chicago) of a couple in their car in traffic, flying the Puerto Rican flag, and there is a video tape of the execution. yesterday I also noticed several reports of vicious robberies in Chicago which I had not seen before. Whether this is an actual case of uptick in incidents or just an uptick in reporting, either way is not good for tourism or giving it consideration as place to live. Four examples -

but it's clearly not, won't help that much at all, as majority of the current epidemic of mayhem and homicide is due to handguns, it's just that simple, anyone paying attention to crime news can see it. You can shoot a lot of people with a handgun, it's happening every day (and a lot of injuries are also clearly due to the perps being bad shots with their handguns!)
