The Gulf Arab states have long dreaded the prospect of Iran developing nuclear weapons and worry about Tehran’s various militia proxies across the region. Until recently, most of them took a hardline stance against Iran and its policies in the region, confident that they could do so while safe under the protective umbrella of the US military. Now they have less confidence in American support and if the US will even retain its military presence in the Middle East. Several leading Gulf countries have already approached Tehran for bilateral negotiations to reduce tensions in the region, at least partially out of recognition that US military might not be there forever.

So a big reason why I posted this was to emphasize that, while Biden was aggressive in getting out of Afghanistan as soon as possible and his Defense Department seems more interested in combating "whiteness" than anything to do with the Middle East, Global Comment, which is a top of the line progressive publication, is sounding like the Weekly Standard in the 2000s. Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.

Actions to take:

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
