I've been kinda outta the loop the last few days, so the headline about John Bolton slamming Obama for awarding a medal to Mary Robinson caught my attention.  http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204251404574342152496390582.html#articleTabs%3Darticle

He was unsurprisingly bombastic, but he set me to digging for more objective work on the subject.  The Irish Times did a piece reacting to the medal awarding, with some of her "defense":  http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/0807/1224252150352.html

Her defense that she was not in control of the Durban conference - and the other UN-related efforts during her tenure - didn't strike me as very convincing.  And, it was glaring that she was apparently not denouncing the resolutions from those conferences (she did denounce the distribution of virulently anti-Semitic cartoons at Durban). 

I checked out the website for the "Realizing Rights" intiative she started (realizingrights.org) - didn't find anything there.

Found a measured blog post by a Canadian history professor, Gil Troy, who has apparently tried to hold Ms. Robinson's feet to the fire in the past (and apparently succeeded, to an extent).  http://cgis.jpost.com/Blogs/troy/entry/honoring_mary_robinson_obama_honors1 

My conclusion (as posted as a comment to Mr. Troy's post):  While her award is NOT based upon her acts/stmts on this one issue, it is my conclusion that her encouragement - silent or overt - of blatant anti-Jewish/Israel should disqualify her.
  Thank you, Mr. Troy.  I was looking for more on what Ms. Robinson has actually said - her defense (the Irish Times article) that she didn't have control over the Durban conf (or subsequent ones) struck me as a bit "off" because she didn't condemn the Durban results.  Based on your obvious knowledge of the subject, I am concluding that she has NOT spoken out against the anti-Semitism of the Durban conf, etc.

As I was limited to 600 characters there, I condensed somewhat.  I certainly understand that the Administration is claiming it isawarding her the medal for other purposes (God, I would hope so!).  However, even the White House indicates that it is her human rights work that is the reason for the award, and the Durban conference was one of the main "incidents" in that career.  Her unwillingness to be concerned with human rights for all humans is too disconcerting, and should have prompted the Administration to forego awarding her the Medal of Freedom.

However, I see Mr. Bolton's column as an(other) attempt by the anti-Obamaists to try to peel Jews away from the President, while giving the right something else to bitch about.  I don't think that he will accomplish that goal.
