McCain thrown under his own bus?

Just wondering ... Have the congressional Republicans just thrown McCain under the "Straight Talk" Express? By opposing the bailout, and messing up the works for McCain, (denying him his "shining knight" moment), could they be reluctantly acknowledging a probable Obama victory and making a play for a consolation prize? Could they now be pinning their hopes on America voting for a divided government, i.e., turning the House and Senate into Republican majorities? I'm not saying I think it's a good idea, or that it has any chance of working, but could that be behind their sudden "Populist" thinking? Or am I over-thinking things?
