The Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) held a conference in Washington D.C. May 5, 2015 that lasted 2 days. INET is a nonprofit think tank that was started with a 50 million dollar funding from it's founder, George Soros, in October 2009. The organization is located in New York City. Robert Johnson is the current President of the organization. It took 2 years to put this conference together and featured women speakers, though it was not about women in finance but about Finance and Society. Normally a conference on finance like this is dominated by men.
For years media has covered and interviewed many from think tanks that are supported by right leaning political activist. Little attention has been given to progressive groups so I was not aware this group, There was a need for new economic thinking after the 2008 financial crisis. Soros got together with others that was willing to support a institution dedicated to new ideas in economics and to nurture young people in the field of economics. The unique thing about this group is it in not about political spin and ideology but a serious look at what is needed to make our economy work for everyone. It also focus on the international economy also because when our banks was in crises, it spread to other countries.

Yesterday Calbuco Volcano erupted for the first time in about 50 years. During the night it sent off a second round of lava and ash. This article was the best one I could find that covers the event with detail, pictures and video. Calbuco is in Southern Chile and is part of the ring of fire. Chile has the largest amount of these volcanoes in this chain. The main worry is that the ash column will collapse and send a pyroclastic flow over the area for several hundred miles that could destroy everything.

This is the time of year for Phalaenopsis type orchids to bloom. This type of orchids are the most common and easy to grow. The blooms can last up to 6 weeks and are the favorite for a showy house plant. They originate from South East Asia and Northern Australia. I have several on my front porch that is putting on a show this year. They make a great gift plant instead of cut flowers because they last so long.

When I was really young in the early 1950's I remember helping my mom make laundry soap out of Fels-Napha bar soap, Octagon bar soap or Ivory bar soap. Octagon is no longer being made. For baby diapers she would use Ivory bar soap. She would make it up in a bucket every couple of months. She would grate it and cook it and mix it up in a bucket of water. I never thought to ask her about it later in life. It was just something that was history along with her Maytag Ringer Washer. I can still smell that soap in my mind.
