Daniel Schulman, an editor of Mother Jones, has written a biography of the Koch family. The book, Sons of Witchita, went on sale today. Mother Jones has an interesting excerpt from the book on their web page. I expect this to make the best seller list quickly because of David and Charles Koch political activities. This book will open a curtain into the dysfunction of this very wealthy family and expose their roots into fascism.
Kentucky's primary is Tuesday. Louisville Courier-Journal has an op-ed in Sunday's paper that has an interesting take on McConnell's primary. He could very well come out of this primary weakened. The poling has shown a solid tossup for months with Grimes for the general election in the fall.
For the last 15 months there has been a stationary high pressure dome over Western Russia and some of Eastern Europe. It has been effecting world wide weather. It is causing the jet stream behave harmonically. In other words it is real wavy in order to move around the block of the high pressure dome. For the last couple of weeks there has been flooding in China, South Eastern Europe and torrential rains in the Middle East. This is all the effects of global warming. Our media is ignoring it and we should be paying more attention to this.
This is a close look at what it is like to be a female editor of a dying newspaper. A newspaper full of worried middle aged men that don't want to change. It is a good read on the glass ceiling.
There has been an push back on allowing Verizon, Comcast and other large companies to charge extra fees to high content users. The FCC Chairman, Tom Wheeler has come out with a statement that is showing he will use the Title II Common Carrier classification if he has too. The fight has been going on now for several years. He has the power to do so under the 1930's law. We will see if it happens. If not this will become a political issue. They should have classified the internet ISP's as a common carrier in 1996.
In today's issue of Polico's Magazine cover story, former VP Al Gore talks about climate change and what he is doing currently. He also makes a point that President Obama is seriously working on the global warming issues but with the current climate in congress he has it very hard.
The most important issue that the world faces right now in global warming. We are beginning to see the effects of it in extreme weather world wide. It is very depressing to see the politicians be bought by and owned by the fossil fuel companies. This week Rachel Maddow covered how Oklahoma passed a law placing a fine or fee on anyone who uses solar or wind energy. This bill was written a lobbied for by Koch industries owners through their political efforts. It seems to defy reality that is all around us, that we need to reduce are carbon foot print.
Chris Hayes has published an essay recently in the Nation that has an interesting look at why the fossil fuel industry has gone to war to prevent any restraints on their industry and protect the high dependency on fossil fuel. He compares it to the value of slaves owned in the old south to the value of the resources that are owned by fossil fuel companies. We are going to have to ask the companies to give up trillions of dollars of future wealth and leave 80% of it in the ground. Like the south they will not give that up with out a big fight.
This didn't get much traction in the news a couple of weeks ago but is part of what AG Holder has been working on to reduce the prison population. This is expected to reduce the population by about 6500 in the first 5 years. They are still constrained by mandatory 5 years sentences. This just shows how a unified effort is behind this. I am sure Harry Reed will not bring it up to a vote.
The resent standoff with BLM at Bunkervile, Nev. Cliven Bundy claims to have grazing rights on public land based on his family settling there in the 1870's. Land records and court records show that this is not true.
Our President and Justice Dept have been working on reducing the unfair sentencing of drug users that are in prison. Holder just made a big announcement of seeking applications for this process. There will be further announcements later this week. This is good news for many who are now serving unjust sentences.
The Koch brothers are trying to stem the tide of solar energy. They are running campaigns, lobbying and writing legislation through ALEC. They are trying to get states to ban solar panels and net metering or place a monthly fee to support the grid.
The farm bill that was passed recently is going to allow commercial hemp to be grown again in the US. This is going to be a major plus for farmers because it is a natural weed and doesn't require much water. It is beneficial to the soil with it's long roots. There are many applications for the fiber and oil. It is also a bio-fuel and is being used in Germany to generate energy. This will also move farmers away from GMO grains and into more sustainable farming practices.
Salon's article covers it's current uses and how it will be good for the economy.
The election in Florida is going to be interesting not only because of Charley Crist rebid for Governor but because Medial Marijuana on the ballot. Question now is this really going to increase democrat voters? Majority is in favor of it.
This article is 7 days old but it is worth the read about a virus epidemic in pigs. Most effected are the corporate pig farms. It is going to cause a shortage of pork and bacon and the prices will be going up. We are at a 60 year low in the production of beef because of the drought.
Russia has their hands full with wild fires in Siberia. The melting of the permafrost and drying out of the thick peat that has been there forever is fueling these fires. This used to be the World's carbon sink but is turning out to be quickly releasing it's carbon and methane. This has been at crises level since 2009. It started earlier this year.
There is other changes that are going on in the tropical oceans then just heating up. The Pacific Ocean has increased CO2 by 65% since 1998. The Kelvin Wave is very acidic and will effect fishing along the California and Alaska coast.
This is a good article with easy to understand charts.
Charles Blow should be writing speeches for the Democrats that are running. This is really a good op-ed piece. It is about voter apathy. It is very emotionally moving.
Now we hear murmuring that Republicans hold a slight advantage going into 2014, not strictly because that’s the will of the American people, but because that may well be the will of the people willing to show up at the polls.
