clearly, as shown by the following, this has legs as an issue for GOP, and I think it's mostly cynical, I suspect it is a way to pick up support from past Trump fans without taking on Trump whole hog
one example is Anne Coulter, she dumped Trump over this, if he is defined by one issue, it was this and he didn't end up being successful at anything he promised.
also, this is a passionate issue for a significant group of people as they are bi-partisan! there are Dems and lefties who believe lax immigration is the death of the country
